Well, unbeknownst, I had the camera set to black & white so the "blue" is missing but not the bird!

Boy, I was sure kicking myself when I got home and noted "no color." I agree that the perch is unique. Other Great Blues' were in a field on the ground and not half as interesting or as close. Thanks. I take your comment to heart!

Downloading makes this a real winner. The Blue is very sharp and well isolated from the oof background.

Very nice! If it's a RAW file, there's a good chance you can convert it to color.

This is nicely done. You have an excellent pose and wonderful separation of the subject. Do they usually stand on one leg? I'm not really familiar with these.

No, it is not a RAW file unfortunately. I used the Advance setting on the camera which negates RAW.

The Great Blue Heron is a visitor not a resident for our area so I have little experience with this bird but; that said, nearly all water birds do rest on one leg at one time or another. We have had so much standing water, and flooded areas this winter which have attracted migrating birds to stop and stay awhile. Lucky us!

Nice. Everybody shoots these critters in color, but this one's different. Is it a touch heavy to the left, or is it just me?

Not sure what you mean but the bird is at an angle to the camera and part of the wing is facing leftward, if that makes any sense?

You're right. I think it's because both the beak and the clump of dark trees are to the left, while to the right are more open spaces. But I don't think it's bad enough to kill the image. It is, as you said, "a touch" out of balance.

"Bad" is relative. Thanks for your insight.

Nice shot! I have a solution for you for the black and white (to lessen similar mistakes). Shoot is RAW. Or Jpeg + RAW. Then there will be no presets like B&W. So, you will then not have any more mistakes like that. It is just an idea.

Thanks for your suggestion! I'll do it.
