And now this past Saturday,
The Adult Education Photography Program where I took some digital photo classes. Due to budget problems of the Covina Valley Unified School District, the school is shut down for the time being. It may reopen next August in some form. Students are sad.

For private Brooks Institute I heard it rumored that management was mismanaging their finances if not steeling funds. For my Adult Ed program it is mainly state budget problems for education in general. The local school district that ran the school and program had to cut back and that came mostly out of Adult Ed funds.

Ah, Covina, I owned a home in the county area between Azusa and Covina for 20 years. Our oldest went to Gladstone, only a two block walk so he had a pass to eat lunch at home.

Lots of things have closed or been cut back drastically over the years as new tech etc changes the world. It is photography's turn now. And magazines and newspapers generally. A few I read went over to online only to stay in business.

Where I live now they have some photography classes, gardening, even model railroading. They don't seem to have a problem because the people who attend the classes pay for them. I took a couple of landscaping classes that were well worth the money. I don't want to pay for my neighbors basket weaving class.

As for various magazines shutting down, it is kind of sad. I remember waiting for Pop Photo to learn photo techniques, learn the best time to shoot somewhere, or what new gear might be coming out. Today all I have to do is Google it and I have the information before the magazine editors can hand it to the proof readers. Most online columnists don't need to wait for the printer, nor do they bother with proof readers. As long as they get it out first.

I recently contacted a writer/video producer because I thought they overlooked an important option that would make doing something a lot easier than they had explained it. They agreed and added that it shows how little they use that feature. Before we 'discussed' it I had the impression it was an attempt to sway people to "do it my way". I have a lot of respect for this person and their abilities and am convinced it was an oversight.

It is the depth of talent in writing and editing that will be missed as publications like Pop Photo disappear.

Actually TCSP while I was attending charged something like $260 per Term or $900 per Year for classes and lab time. If they restart the program my guess it will have to be self sustaining with much higher prices. They actually had been lowering the prices but with shorter terms over the years. I think that is what caused part of the problem, they were having to ask for tax money that was not forthcoming from the state of CA. Other classes with the Covina-Valley USD are much less than the photography classes.

With camera sales in a decline, I suppose enrollment in camera classes would also decline. It costs a lot to keep a business running.

Brooks Institute had its own issues. My Adult Ed program photo school was more a victim of state education funding cut backs. The classes have less to do with cameras and more to do with software for Still, Video, Film, and TV editing and processing. Seems what I could tell was specific local problems with the program and not so much global market or social changes. Some people at the school even used CellPhones at times.

Sadly, seems to be the sign of our times.
