(Photographer) Dey's location of choice is on Southside Drive, about a mile past Cathedral Beach to the right of El Capitan. Park your car and take a walk towards the river to make sure you have a view of the waterfall on your left side. It is likely that you will see other photographers there, and that will tell you that you are at the right spot. Set-up about 11am for a 5:30pm setting sun illumination of the 1,000-foot-tall Horsetail Fall.

Nikon D810 and Nikkor 70-200mm zoom lens at 200mm, minor PP cropping.

Decades ago, "they" used to build a raft of timber and trimmings at the top of Yosemite Falls, set it ablaze and release it to be carried down the falls after setting sun. That was so long ago, that on a visit in the 80's we inquired if the practice was still followed, (we had been living in England for several years). The reply was, "they quit doing that in 1969". How time flies!

As a child, I remember witnessing the evening occurrence of the original "firefall" from Glacier Point in Yosemite Valley. From Camp Curry, it was a sight to behold. I was too young for photography, and at that time, we just assumed that the practice would continue indefinitely. Read more here: http://yosemitefirefall.com/yosemite-firefall-glacier-point

Huell Howser, a host on PBS had an episode of (I think) California's Gold about this. He went into the history of the original Firefalls and showed a video of the Horsetail falls version.

Only happens during the last two weeks of February and when the sky is clear & there has been rain &/ snow recently. The setting sun reflects off the wet wall and the whole show only lasts for a few minutes. But it's spectacular!
