W/R on getting advice

There is a section on the UHH mostly made up of a few novice "photographers" who constantly ask each other for opinion, help and advice on seemingly every snapshot they jag.

The advice invariably takes the form of disingenuous praise or suggestions of clumsy finger painting and fiddling that frequently results in an absurdly rendered version even less interesting or attractive than the candidate for the trash can that was posted.

Looking for advice from them is akin, if you were ill, to asking the hypochondriacs in the waiting room rather than seeing the doctor.....

Most of the people are hobbiests and snap shooters and simply want a good representation of
what they saw. There are very few serious "art" photographers on UHH. It's not that kind
or forum.

OK. Some advice is sound and some isn't. Move on. Have another Foster's and enjoy your day.

It is best to assume that all of the "advice" from the cozy little club puddlers, if followed, will only get newbies to their level.

This is a good reason for the various sections, the cliques can stay together, talk to each other, give each other good or poor advice - all without frustrating the hell out of the rest of us.

Oh Rob you can be a cruel man but unfortunately for the people your referring too you are perfectly correct. We seem to have a group of snappers who genuinely believe that the blind leading the blind will result in a good learning experience. Add to that an overwhelming delight in anything that can qualify in the eyes of the blind as experimental and we have the joke you are talking about.
A good well taken sharp perfectly exposed shot will be overlooked. Preference will be given to shots taken whilst swinging a camera around your head with the shutter open Photoshop experiments with no idea of where the result will end that can loosely be described as abstract or even a few odd bits on a coffee table described as still life. Make up a few feelings you were supposed to be having whilst pressing the shutter or use a Nokia and you will get em dancing in the aisles Love it or loathe it but it is what it is. I know you were hopeful it could be useful area to show work and get feedback and advice but if you just accept it as an area of fun it can be enjoyable.

This site was built for hobbyist and only a handful of professionals stick around to give advice. If your looking for Feedback post your images on 500px or view bug. Lots of professionals on those sites. You can PM anyone of them and ask for honest critique. Now if you just pointing out everyones inability to live up to your standards, or that this hobbyist site is run by hobbyist, maybe this should be moved to the complaint department, the Attic..

Rob, once you have succeeded in your avowed intent of either saving UHH from the evil FYC or changing FYC to fit your own high ideals I would like to think that you will move onto saving the world or, at least, remodelling the world in your own image.
