I don't carry a knife but I keep a Stanley knife in the ute. My main knives are unique Japanese carving knives. The bevel is on one side only, the back is flat and forged hollow. These edges are very easy to maintain. My stones are Hard Black Arkansas, a combo Washita/Soft White Arkansas and a German manufactured med./fine water stone. Kerosene is the lubricant for all the stones.

Ulmia bench chisels from 50mm - 3mm. I have around 35 carving tools these two, 35mm #3 and 10mm #3 are most useful to me everyday and are kept with the bench chisels. The wheel on my grinder is a 180mm 60 grit aluminium oxide, it cuts fast and cool without water.

I carry a pocket knife with me just about everywhere I go. I own several, so if one gets seriously dull, I pass it on and replace it with a newer one. I don't use them much, but I keep them around just in case.
I have plenty of utility knives with replaceable blades for utility cutting.

In Spain it is ilegal to carry any sort of knife on you. The fine for doing so is 400 Euros.

I always have at least 1 knife and my Leatherman on me. I like to be prepared. I keep them sharp with both ceramic and a butcher's steel.

1. Yes, in my purse.

2. Yes, my Daddy taught us that a dull knife was a danger to the user and everyone within an arms reach.

3. Arkansas Stone

Once came by the tail end of a photo shoot and noticed they had tied up a bed sheet from a couple trees. (I still don't know if that was for an outdoor backdrop, shading, or to reflect light a bit.) Anyway I guess all turned out well until they started to disassemble things. They couldn't untie the rope to the sheet/tree.

No one had anything to cut with so I handed them my Swiss Army Knife. One guy yelled out those things are not sharp at all and it wouldn't work on nylon rope. I just smiled and told them to try it. Like cutting warm butter, my knife went through the rope. The guy's jaw dropped!

That leads me to wonder:

1 How many carry a knife with them? (short of an airport, etc.)
2 How many keep it sharp?
3 For those who do, what do you sharpen with?

For me, 1 = Yes, 2 = Yes, 3 = A small ceramic "dog-bone". (I hold the knife still at angle and slide the dog bone across, most of the time sliding out to the tip of the blade.)

I always kept one on my key chain for at least 35 years. Until last year the ring that held it on wore thru. I used it ALL the time. To open boxes, cut tape etc. you'd be surprised how often it's needed. In fact, others would ask me, "Harry, do you have your knife?" And it is very very sharp and I keep it that way. Now what do I do with it? It sits in a kitchen drawer. It doesn't do me any good sitting there. Now I have to buy a new one for the lack of ring. I use one of those V shaped sharpeners and always warn anyone who uses it that IT'S SHARP. Don't try to bring it into a courtroom or on a plane. LOL

How can anyone seriously think a Swiss Army knife isn't sharp?

I like to travel light, so I don't carry anything, but I have knives located conveniently - along with small flashlights - around the house.

I have carried a knife most of my life. Nowadays it is a tactical folder that I can open one handed and I'm am using it daily to open mail, cut foods, etc. There is at least one man alive today because I carry a sharp knife and had to cut his seat belt to remove him from his crashed and burning car! I keep it sharp using a Spyderco ceramic sharpener as a dull knife is just about useless.

I keep a Leatherman Wingman on my belt. It has all of the essentials and has come in
handy on more than one occasion. The blade part is always sharp.

I am a avid Hunter! and fisherman! I go nowhere without a sharp knife or two! In fact I seldom go anywhere without a gun! It is a dangerous world out there and I chose not to be a victim! I do not recommend it without proper training and practice practice! Just like photography. However, it is how I roll and my wife as well!

1 I carry a knife when in the woods, and when out shooting pics usually. Carry something more lethal if I am going to be in a place where it may
warrant it. And yes, licensed.
2 A dull knife requires more force to cut something, which increases the chances of the user not having complete control over the cut. So if it is
not sharp, leave it home!
3 I have several stones, including a hard Ark, had those since I was a kid, they do a respectable job. Now I use a water immersed wheel, fine grit
bench grinder for rough work. And one of several diamond hones to finish the job. Japanese water stones work well too! But I work with wood
and metal so need to get quality edges on cutting tools.
