Traveling to Alaska soon. Need advice for a light weight tripod/monopod which will fit in a carry on. Cost is an issue so go easy with suggestions. Thanks.

I have a carbon fiber Benro Travel Angel II at about 430.00 They don't make this model anymore, but the FTACV1 is the replacement for 440. Aluminum is 300. This is a carbon fiber unit with a 22# capacity that weighs less than 4#. Both come with Arca Swiss compatible ball heads, and both convert to a monopod.

I left mine on top of the jeep after a recent shoot and it fell off at 45 mph. Skinned it up a bit, but did not hurt any function.

I think I'd opt for the monopod and get one that can double as a walking stick, or a walking stick the can double as a monopod, I know I carry tripods more than I use them, Just my point of view, Bob.

I have a MeFoto Roadtrip. It folds to 15" and supports 17 lb. It also converts to a monopod. $199.00. Comes with an Arca compatable ball head. Great tripod and you cannot beat the price/value combination.

Thanks Bob. Had looked at Vanguards monopods that convert to a walking stick. Wife can use it when not shooting.

I have a walking stick that converts to a mono pod, 1/4-20 screw, or a shooting stick, has ball head for walking and a "V" head for holding a rifle, or a long lens, adjusts up to more than 5' too, and I have a regular mono pod too

I have taken two trips to Alaska. You won't need a tripod on monopod. Don't take the FUN out of this trip. Travel RIGHT, travel LITE. And have a LITE beer up there on me.

Like everything else, you spend a little more and buy right the first time and there is no second guessing. I broke down and bought a Gitzo carbon fiber mountaineer and have never looked back; ultralight, stable, and packs easily. I know it's tough to part with the $$$ but it's worth it in the end.

Forgot to add... everyone talks about ball heads and Arca compatible; I personally think a good pistol grip with Q/R is the bees knees.. I use it on my monopod as well as tripod.
Easier target acquisition, one handed operation with no fumbling with knobs. I use a Slik and my Acratech ball head is a backup. Just an opinion, but it works great. Take a couple 12-18 strips of Velcro tape and keep them wrapped around monopod... great for securing monopod to fence rails, posts, etc...

Weight is a biggie in checked (50 lb max) luggage. I use a Benro carbon fiber travel angel tripod (15" folded)w/ small markins ballhead and similar carbon fiber monopod(14"folded) w/old Manfrotto monopod angle top, all with arca-swiss compatible quick releases, permitting quick on/off. I tried a walking stick with detachable head and 1/4x20 stud for holding camera, but it took too much time to attach. I DO use a cane, so the monopod was on a strap over my shoulder and utilized as needed. I have a small carabiner on my cane leash and just hook it to my pants belt loop when shooting. Hope this helps.
