Shapes & Texture & Light

Some years back I had the privilege to work with Lois Greenfield who is a very well known dance photographer in NYC. She came out west to photograph the Aspen and Denver Ballet Companies. One of the surprising things I discovered was that Lois has absolutely no interest in photographing anything other than dance. At the time I thought that a bit odd.

That was then. Now, here I am doing pretty much the same thing. Focusing my attention and creativity on flowers and foliage. But now I see what I could not see then.

Lois wasn't photographing dancers - she was photographing movement/color/form and energy - she was working with the basic stuff of life. When I photograph flowers, I am not seeing Iris or Tulip or even blue or red. I simple see light / texture / movement / form and color - thats the stuff I am really playing with.

I think thats really the stuff all of us are messing with but for convenience sake we call it "Flowers" "birds" "buildings" "people," etc...and if we could remember more readily that labels like the above and those like "liberal" "conservative" "republican" "democrat" are also just labels - just cognitive conveniences too, we might all start to enjoy a little more light, a little more life, and little more love in ourselves and in each other.

One's photographs will improve greatly too!
