It could easily be that Nikon is really gearing up for something special later on this year. Since it is Nikon's 100th anniversary this year. Or it could also easily be that Nikon is just falling flat on their face. Nikon has been on an unprecedented rapid decline over the last few years. (Clearly have a management problem) Releasing very few products. And "some" of those are very minor tweaks of former products, Releasing a me-too product in a completely saturated market, (Mission) and "some" other products have had severe quality issues. And finally canceling the DL series that had great promise. Nikon is probably going to fall into 3rd place behind Canon and Sony in camera sales. Sad, since at one time Nikon was in 1st place by a wide margin.
I am in Nikon's corner and wish them success. But Nikon needs to do something "revolutionary" to reversed their steady decline.
I ran across a video post on the internet last evening by the Angry Photographer in which his sources said Nikon was seriously moving into Mirrorless cameras just after their 100 year anniversary.
Considering the source (internet) , I don't know if this is true, but it is germane to your post.
