The trees have lots of detail in them. Especially the bark on the tree to the right. They also form a grand archway that leads us into what is the focal point of this composition I think. Without the two figures and the dog, we would not have anything to focus on and the composition would be vague. By having those figures at the edge of the fog, the composition becomes unified.
