It might be an idea to subdue the background even more. It's adding more unneeded dialogue.

I haven't tried this myself, but looking at it I would de-contrast and darken the background. It wouldn't be a bad thing for the background to be in contrast to the foreground snow. But you'd have to watch the edge between the two - you wouldn't want a line forming there.

an interesting picture Sandra. I particularly like the many (4?) distinct colors of the snow.

The color temperature is dramatically different in the sunlit areas and shadow areas. That's what caught my attention and made me take the shot. Contrast between light and shadow is my subject.

Very nice. Very good exposure, nice composition, good use of DOF. Perhaps a bit of burning of the background to darken it. That would bring more attention to the snow, which is the subject of the photograph.

Hello Bob Both you and RG have suggested darkening the background. I had thought about it. Here's my question. Would a darker background create more contrast, therefore becoming more of a distraction. I almost wished that at the time I had taken it from a perspective that eliminated the background altogether, but then there is the thought that the eye needs a place to escape. Just thinking out loud.

I suggested de-contrasting the background as well as darkening it. Just darkening it would still leave distracting details whereas darken + de-contrast would leave it properly un-eyecatching. The way the background is just now there's enough detail to leave us peering into the distance trying to discern what's there.

Your composition is interesting. But for best snow pictures the exposure needs to be set at +2 EV. The camera software always makes bright white turn to dirty grey. Also when asking advise it is better to click on "store original" so we can see the camera settings. David
