Bought a new Nikon D500 and can't open the raw files.
I have Photoshop CS6 not CC.
Downloaded the correct Adobe DNG app (9.5) and it still won't open the raw files in Adobe Camera Raw.
Tried every work around I could think of.
Nikon Capture will open them but it sucks. It opens them as huge Tif files.
I want my files to open in Adobe Camera Raw as raw files.
Do I have to subscribe to Photoshop CC?

Have you downloaded and installed the latest Camera Raw software?

Downloading the DNG app won't allow you to open the original RAW files in ACR. You would need to convert the RAW images to DNG using the app and then open the DNG files in ACR.

And that software is available from links within: http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/adobe-dng-converter.html

First, I wholeheartedly agree that the Nikon software is not very good. That being said, there are several workarounds but they are just that. Lr CC will 'take the load off' in this process and make it more of a pleasure than a pain. Personally speaking, for $ 10 per month, the cost of breakfast out for one, Lr CC is more than worth it, AND you get Ps for no additional cost AND they are always the latest version. I made the decision to learn and use Lightroom, I did that, and I would NEVER ever, go back. YMMV.

All you need to do is get the latest version of Photoshop Elements; For about $100, you can have all the Photoshop features you need, including camera raw. I use Photoshop Elements 14, but there are even newer versions. I also have CS5 which I also use. I hope this helps.

Adobe stopped allowing CS6 to upgrade ACR at 9.1.1. The chart says the D500 needs 9.5 or higher.

You get three Adobe choices:
1. Opt into the CC plan at $10 a month (or less when you find an annual subscription when on sale).
2. Buy Photoshop Elements 15 for $50 to $90, depending on sales promotions.
3. Use the DNG converter to losslessly batch your NEFs to DNGs for Free.

No. No one can ever tell to subscribe to anything you do not want to.

Sounds like you're doing something odd, no raw converter should open files as TIFF files, before they are even worked on!!!

Except for Obamacare and maybe this if I can't get the DNG converter to work. Which I haven't been able to do so far. I'm not opposed to buying PS Elements, though.

I don't want to work on them in the Nikon capture so I just save it there. (They offer no raw option to save in).
I want Adobe Camera Raw for my raw files. Over the years I've compiled tons of presets, etc. that I like in ACR,

Might want to try Rawtherpee as a raw converter and then send to your software. I use RT, when I am done in RT I can send to Paintshop Pro. RT is free to boot and very comprehensive.

Only if you want to. It will minimize conundrums like this, but you don't have to subscribe to fix it. You just need to get the latest DNG converter, at least for this round. All in all, you really can't go wrong for the price of admission - $10/mo is a fraction of what you spend on photo gear, or as one person put it in a different perspective, the cost of one breakfast for one. Sounds like a no-brainer to me.

I have a D500 and use the DNG converter with no issues. My PS is CS 5.

Paint Shop Pro and On1 Photo Raw (and others) will handle your NEF files.

DNG Converter does work. It should batch process all the NEFs into DNG copies that open in CS6 or any other Adobe product. What's not working? Can you post some screen shots?
