Been out of photography for a long time

Greetings everyone,
When I was a teenager and also when I was in the Navy I was very interested in photography. I purchased a mid-range 35mm camera and really enjoyed the hobby.
For the last 40+ years the only pictures I have taken were the everyday family photos. I have gone through a series of the lower cost point & shoot digital cameras.
I miss the old days of "shoot and soup", but digital is nice when you can see the results and delete the losers.
Now that I have retired and have a lot of time I really would like to get back into the hobby. I have looked at some of the DSLR's and although they are really nice being retired I am limited for spending money. The DSLR is way above what I could spend.
I have several small flower gardens, so I enjoy macro shots and long distance nature. I have looked at several of the higher end tele. point and shoot and like either the Nikon D500 or Canon SX30.
Being new to the forum I was wondering everyones thoughts about these two cameras or other choices I might consider. I am looking to stay at or under $500.
Thanks,
Chuck
