Here in lightning Ridge opals are mined in this very isolated part of Australia. Materials are costly to bring/transport and buy so they scavenge and re-use anything they can to build somewhere to live. It is famous for their recycled bottle/can houses, mine tours, art galleries and shanty dwellings. Here are some of the more unusual places we found made from whatever they could find. Mounds of soil are found everywhere here where mining has been done. Scrubby plants and Cactus are the only things that grow out here in the mining areas.

A great slice of Australiana Karenn.
Judging by your first reply you can tell it's going to bewilder most from overseas.
Have you every been there. It is like a world of its own with the landscape looking like another planet, being so barren and all the earth moving going on. We have been there twice.

Yes, Karenn. I lived at Moree for 20 years & I used to go to The Ridge regularly, mainly as a competitive pistol shooter. I had many great times there. Earl.

Interesting set! For sue, no matter how distant and hard to get supplies, there will always be plenty of soda and beer bottles!
So true. In our travels and quite close to Lightning Ridge there is a Pub in the middle of the bush called "Club in the Scrub" it is very unique to the surrounding areas and very well known to the locals and travellers.

Fascinating series Karenn. I have never seen anything quite like this.
I enjoyed this weird conglomeration!
These are amazing, Karenn! I've never heard of bottle can houses or bottle windows! Yep, just amazing!
