Was at our local camera store Friday and heard a rumor that Sony was trying to buy Nikon's photo division. From what these people had to say Sony wanted to use Nikon to stay in the dslr market. This was 3rd hand information, has anyone else heard anything ??

Sony bought out Minolta's photo division. Minolta was wrecked financially. Minolta got into digital too late and they were already reeling from Exxon's lawsuit against them. I doubt that Nikon will be selling their camera division.

Exxon is always in court minolta because of the maxxum logo the 2 x's they also went after fox for fxx and Roxx vodka.
Minolta was settled out of court, for an disclosed sum.

here are 10 they have defended against and pretty much got away with

Nikon might want to sell their camera division to Sony but there is a dilemma with the names. I think Sony would want the name Nikon, unlike the case with Minolta they just want the business. But in Nikon sold their name what would they call their remaining business.

Sony didn't want Minolta's business, they wanted Minolta's anti-shake technology.

Yep, again! Any kind of guess on how many pages this insipid discussion will go and how quickly it will go off topic?

I was talking with a camera store owner in Staunton, VA who got a large shipment of those early Minolta Maxxum 7000 cameras that had the double x's that resembled Exxon's logo. He kept several for himself. I didn't know that other companies got sued as well.

And I wanted Sony because I have a box of wonderful Maxxium Lenses** from my Minolta 7000i which I hated.... It knew better than me and fought my settings.... I will never forgive that computer .... Rootwad, waterfall, sun peaking over edge and me laying in 50* water trying to take the shot. My old manual set while viewing Ricoh camera would do what I commanded.

** part of the anti-shake technology was that these lenses were so heavy..... cast-iron me thanks! Love my Alpha 65

Sony makes the sensor for Nikon.

"Nikon do not have a fab <sensor fabrication> facility (that I'm aware of or could find) so no sensors are produced in-house. They are known to use sensor packages from Sony... "

Quite listening to and repeating rumors. If it happens, it happens, and there is nothing anyone can do about it. These things happen every day.

The name "Pentax" is used both by Ricoh - who purchased the camera line - and by Hoya - who sold the camera line but kept the medical line.

Why would they want to buy a company that is losing money?
