I have a Canon G11 that does a great job.It has since been upgraded but I would buy another Canon
P&S.

Even though I shoot Nikon, I would agree with this choice. We had a G5 & it was excellent. I have handled the G11 & it is a nice size too.

If she wants something a little bigger, the Sony a6000 is a fantastic camera (or the newer a6300). With a 35/1.8 lens, it makes a small enough camera that is good in low light

I gave my wife my old DSLR , taught her how to use it and off we went to shoot waterfalls.
Her eye was better than mine. My pix were technically better hers were just shot from better angles. Plus while I was shooting a fall, she was shooting the steps to the falls. It was the best pic of the day .. I dont take her with me any more.

👍👍👍

The so called bridge cameras are often the most complicated cameras. Much more so than a DSLR.

Agree! And many (bridge cameras) are not really a "purse camera" if that's what the OP is looking for.

Do get her Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure. Get a few blank SD cards at a Best Buy and have a blast with cameras in your price range. The Sony a6000 is the best bargains around. The new a6500 is a little over priced but is a better camera. Check others. Serve as model and let her check images over lunch and come to her own conclusion.

From the OP's initial post: She said all she wants is a simple to use digital camera that takes decent photos; something with focus but not much else.

I cannot imagine how the a6___ series meets that description.

I got my wife a Sony RX100, which is small, has a viewfinder and takes high-quality pics. She uses it in the Program/Auto mode. She loves it and is perfect for her. However, it has all the bells & whistles that I like. I think there are other similar cameras to consider. Bottom line: When picking a "simple" camera for her, include the features that you want. Then, both of you will be happy. Remember to configure it back to the simple mode when you give it back to her.

For me, this makes sense.

GG,

I am in complete agreement with your low light kit: A6___ + 35/1.8 lens (that lens in on my a6000 unless I have a specific application for one of the other lenses, simply because it's light, compact, and all-purpose).

Question: Did your a6000 kit go on the shelf when you returned from Ireland?

Not entirely. When we flew to Florida for a month, I took two Sony cameras and only the 35 mm lens for the a6000. I also have an RX100 that stays in my purse. It was on the expensive side but it would fit the bill for the OP's wife.

For special occasions, I use the Nikon...and for parties...it depends...mostly the Nikon. When I'm desperate, I use my iPhone7! lol
