For many years, my family lived near a small town named "Gas City", which became a place 100 years ago because of a local gas boom. In the dozen years since we moved away from that county, Gas City seems to have embraced their past. Today I drove through the town on my way back from visiting our older daughter, and the pictures below show what I saw.

street signs are supported by poles looking like tiny drilling derricks

Garfield-the-cat statues have been erected around the country to celebrate cartoonist Jim Davis, who was born in the county; Gas City's contribution has a derrick also

this gazebo-like structure seems to be a waiting area of some sort; it's ironwork features derrick-shapes also

I seem to remember there was a chain of gas stations, named what else "Gas City" but i only saw them in Illinois.
