Heading to the Azores for a week's vacation. Anybody have any photo suggestions. Will be on São Miguel Island the whole time. Hopefully my eye won't go out this time. I'll post some pics when I get back.

I have been there and loved it. It is relativlely unspoiled and still rustic. The island of San Miguel consists of two volcanic mountains conected by a narrow land bridge. The Portuguese are very friendly and accomodating. I am not near my computer to look up some of the places we visited but will be later to day and will post more for you and maybe some photos.
I was a crew member with the Navy Airborn Early Warning System in the early 60's and we would at time stay at the AirForce base at Lajes...
The Azores are one very beautiful set of island and at no time will you be lacking the oportunity to take some good images... The resturants put out some super great food... The butter is some of the worlds best tasting... Outstanding... Rains a lot, but don't remember what that season was...
I envey you... You will have a great time....

Ponta Delgada is the major city. There are lots of activities you can participate in from hiking to SCUBA diving. The seafood is fresh and incredible. It has been 6 years since I was there, so my memory is a little rusty. It seems that there is one road that encircles the island and a ffew that cross the mountain and they have many beautiful vistas. There are natural areas like Lake Fogo and Sete Cidades that are worth seeing. The Islets called Mosteiros are beautiful. There is still some volcanic activity and I remember going to a restaurant that cooked the meal in the ground at a thermal hot spot. All in all, a beautiful, relaxing place to go and as I said before, the people are friendly and accomodating, as are the Portuguese in general. I'm sure you will enjoy the trip. Are you flying directly there from the US or are you going to Portugal first and then to San Miguel?

Flying direct from US (plane change in Boston). Thanks for your information. And I hope to get some great whale watching photos, too.
Fish market (early in the day).
