You'll shoot your eye out

One of the dominant elements of beauty in southern california is the sun and I tried several unsuccessful shots that brilliant light bearer. Here is the best I could muster. Had to be careful not to look through the lens though. Is there a safe way to do this without eye damage?
Enjoyed the wildlife as well on our recent vacation there as well.

Sorry, I can't answer your question on eye damage, when taking pictures of the sun. I have an additional question that I would like to add to your question. Does shooting into the sun damage the camera in any way? I believe that that I was told that the cloth shutter system can be damaged by the sun. I like your shot of the two seals.

Yeah, get a 4X ND filter and use live view.

Very nice! Beautiful colors. I use the back screen for things like this.
