Check out Pogo Plug. It does what you asked about and at $29.95 (USD) a year, I think you'll like it!

How do I set-up an on-line host site to post my photos on for viewing by friends?

1. Host site recommendations
2. Photo size to discourage theft
3. The software needed to reduce a 14 MB RAW file down to a "small", viewable size for storage.
4. Anything else I should know about that I haven't considered?

Thanks in advance!

I like Flickr. It's free and is an excellent site. You can reduce the size prior to posting. I use Fast Stone photo resizer.

I will only comment on number 4.

Storing files online is like keeping your money in the bank. Once you have put your money in the bank you do not own any money, only a claim on the bank. If something fails and the bank is bankrupt you loose your claim unless there is some insurance system, then you will get some of your claim back if you are lucky. This pretty much goes for anything you keep elsewhere than in your own storage, also photo files online.

I did not have the impression he was looking for storage. His original post seemed to indicate a "sharing" of photos with friends, relatives inquiry. I did PM him and asked for clarification - sharing vs storage. He did not respond (yet?)

Your analogy is way off base. All bank deposits are insured by the FDIC up to $250,000, so you are fully protected if a bank fails or goes bankrupt. If you have more than $250,000 in a bank account all you have to do is open a separate account. And if you don't believe that you don't own the money, see what happens if you don't pay your taxes and the government puts a lien on and seizes your money in the bank.

Markngolf, I am looking for sharing advice. My experience with Flick'r has been consistently bad. I want to be able to create a private group to share photos and, ideally, to which all members can add photos. Suggestions?

I use Shutterfly. One can create a variety of sites, set privacy limits for sharing, downloading, ... have members register or not. Free, easy to use, good support and flexible. Here's a link to one of my sites. http://imagesbymarkweiss.shutterfly.com/pictures
PM me for further clarifications/assistance. Always willing to help.

Let me know of questions you have regarding Shutterfly.

I have a friend whose wife posted over 500 5GB pictures on OneDrive. She said it was easy and sent me a link. They came up quick and then could be taken from postage stamp size to screen size, then to Full size. Really nice.

I recently shot a curling bonspiel - over 600 photos were then uploaded to Dropbox and I sent an invitation to all participants with permission to download any file to their computer. All were 4x6 inches at 300 ppi and less than 800 kb size. If they wanted any photo for serious printing, they could then email me the file name and the size they wanted and I could make it for them. I leave the photos up for about 2 or 3 months. This has worked well for me for both curling and soccer games when my granddaughters were playing travel soccer. The nice thing is that you get 2 gb free.

Subscribers to the Adobe Lightroom/Photshop subscription bundle get free hosting space on Adobe's Portfolio service. In response to your question 2, the site has the ability to block downloading. Here's my site, if you'd care to see how it looks, but there are a number of different formats available to users.

Interesting! I'm a subscriber and didn't know that! Sounds worthwhile to check into.
