Bryan Peterson, "Understanding Exposure." After reading recommendations, I got the book from the library. I liked it enough to buy a copy. Aside from that there are thousands of hours of free instruction available online.

Ansel Adams three book series: Camera, Negative, Print is still great some 70 years after they were first published.

Bryan Peterson also has a truckload of short videos on YouTube that address all sorts of subjects. He appeals to me because he doesn't assume the viewer knows much, but he never talks down to people who don't know much. The only reason I can't reproduce all of his videos is that he often shoots in other countries. It's usually Bryan and his camera, not three linked speed lights and a professional model. (In fact, Bryan's "models" are often people taking his workshops!)

I went to one of his seminars last year and it was quite a treat, both learning and entertainment wise!

Right. Unless it is specifically about some aspect of digital photography, older photo books are fine. Alibris.com has a great selection for great prices.

Outstanding compilation. I am going to save and print this for personal use. I still have much to learn.

I found a lot of them when I was starting out and figured these would be good to save and share - glad they are helping...

Peterson and Adams were the first that came to mind but they are taken.
If only: Adams had lived into the digital age and had written Photoshop in addition to The Print which is masterful; and
The part before you press the shutter release was addressed as masterfully as these.
