I was at the Apple Store today and asked a question to one of the Apple Help people. I was told the Apple Photo does not recognize raw files. I said that I only shot in raw and the photos went into Apple Photo. He said that I must be shooting in raw and jpg both. Now my question is does Apple Photo not recognize raw and if not how come it accepts my photos. I have always put my photos on my computer , discarded ones I will probably never use then imported into lightroom for editing then exported back into Apple storage. I know this is probably strange but so am I. Also quite old and therefore find change unnerving. I started with Aperture and am so Apple in thinking. Please set me straight.

Apple photo accepts RAW on a MacBook pro Seirra and also on an iPad with the latest ios. I down loaded my raw CR2 photos to my iPad and they all down loaded then when opening them up in Adobe LightRoom for iPad they say very clearly say, "RAW" accross the face of the photo.

I was at the Apple Store today and asked a questio... (

Are you sure it was an employee you were talking to? Photos most certainly does recognize RAW.
Apple stores have always been a very good experience for me, but I can see how not every employee there will know everything about their products.
Yes, it was an apple employee and I did ask if anyone did photography and I was assured by how many pictures were on his I phone. But then it was an Apple Store.
An add on. Over the years we have been very pleased with the help we have gotten at Apple but I have found that sometimes it is hard to find someone who knows cameras and yet can work on two or three computers at once. I have done a couple of photo books an got a lot of help.

The store clerk was mistaken on the photo app. Photo replaced aperture which also was a RAW processor, editor on Mac. So yes you can process your RAW photo files in Apple Photo. I hope this helps.

The Apple employee is wrong. All of my photos--RAW and JPEG, are uploaded into and edited in Photos.
Folks, for accurate information on what RAW formats are supported by iOS 10 and macOS Sierra, check out this Apple article on their Apple Support online page:
"Digital camera RAW formats supported by iOS 10 and macOS Sierra"
https://support.apple.com/en-us/ht207049 With that said, I realized that my MacBook Pro (which I upgraded recently to MacOS Sierra) does not recognize NEF raw files from my new Nikon D5600 camera (no support for D5500 either)... a real bummer. And no word on when MacOS Sierra will be updated to provide such support for those Nikon camera models. I simply can't open any NEF raw file via Photos for Mac app or any other photo-related app I have installed on my Mac (not even via Preview app).

If you shoot both RAW and JPEG when you import into Photos, the JPEG version shows up. To use the RAW, double click on the photo to open it, click on the Edit icon to open the Editing Tool bar, the on the top tool bar, click on Image, then Use Raw as Original. Hope I got this correct. It works for me.
The guy is wacko--I shoot raw and load them straight into Apple Photos on my iMac all the time. It does take raw files, and it takes jpg as well. Apparently you asked the wrong guy. I do not have to do anything special to get them in as raw images--just load them off my card.
mrmal, thanks for your response. Your suggestion to be able to edit raw files in Photos app certainly works that way, **as long as** the RAW file format you are importing is supported by the OS version installed on your Mac computer.

Another vote for you getting wrong information about Photo. Also, Aperture still works with Sierra, so you don't have to give it up yet. I'm still using it, but planning for the dat that it will no longer run with a future Mac OS.

There is the clue to the problem, he was talking iPhone photos! Next time talk to someone who knows something about photography.

Aperture is being pushed out gradually with upgrades to the OP systems. It began a year ago and is increasing with time. Apple TV is now experiencing trouble using Aperture to the extent it will not operate properly. Sierra isn't being written for Aperture so look for it to dissolve sometime soon. Too bad, Aperture had it's good points, I will miss it.
