Shooting High School Hockey through the glass

I shoot amateur hockey at ice level through the glass. Understanding that the glass is marked up and you need to find a clear spot my question should I be putting the lens on the glass itself for better focus? It has a protective filter on it.

On the glass will give you more contrast due to reflections. I do it all the time.

Take the filter off and get a rubber lens hood you can press against the glass.

No need to do anything special. Be at ice level and as close to the glass as possible. (Further away and the photo becomes less sharp) Try to shoot with the Glass in the same "plane" as the lens to reduce distortion. (This photo shot with 70-200f2.8 wide open with 6D ...target was near center ice and I was standing behind the glass just left of the crease) . No issues with focus acquisiton even from the normally "poor for sports" AF system of the 6D :-)
