With the emergency evacuation of the area around the broken spillway at Lake Oroville in place I may not be able to get near the dam. But if I can I think I'm going to give it a try. The weather will be great for the next few days and with any luck I could get some shots that will be once in a lifetime. Somewhere in my old film print archives I have pictures from the 1986 floods of northern CA and from the ones in the 90's. I also have some shots of the river when the gate at Folsom Dam failed in the 90's. I'm thinking of putting together a composite of all those near disasters in our area. Keep your eyes peeled. I hope to have something worth looking at in the next few days.

Keep us posted. I feel sorry for the folks that had to leave their homes.

You will have problems getting anywhere close. 165K people have been evacuated in towns in three counties down river as far as Yuba City. Highways going into the area have been closed to northbound traffic. Major concern that the emergency spillway may fail resulting in uncontrolled flow.

Yep. It looks to be getting better, but why add to the problem? And, we could still have a major event....
According to CBS news. The erosion sent concrete chunks flying out of the main spillway, leaving a 200 foot long gap, with a depth of 30 feet and growing. Engineers are scratching their heads, because this was never expected. Repair we be difficult for certain. Especially that 30+ feet depth opening. Don't accidentally slip and fall in while repairing. The dam is holding structurally though.
This event brings back memories of the Baldwin Hills Dam collapse in 1963 (while they were building the Oroville Dam.) Have to wonder if lessons learned were incorporated in the Oroville construction.

I would advise against it. If the whole thing fails, a distinct possibility, a 30 foot wall of water will carry you away, possibly as far as the Pacific Ocean.
You might try approaching the area from the north. Most of the flood concerns are west and south of the dam.

I have two concerns. The first is for your safety as has already been emphasized by others. The second is that another car is not needed in the area at this time. Even before the crisis, many roads through the Valley floor were closed due to flooding, limiting free movement through the region. Even the "major" highways like Highway 99 are only two lanes at best. Now people, livestock, and other animals are being moved throughout the evacuation area for much better reasons than documentation with more photos. Help at a shelter now; make some great images of the reconstruction process this Summer.

Well said, Sir. We don't need another tourist adding to the problem, and being part of the solution sometimes adds to the pollution.
Why do you want to get in the way of those trying to prevent a major tragedy and keep property safe from looters for your own personal gratification?
