Need to replace my Nikon D200

I just found out that my Nikon D200 will need to be replaced. It is only 4 years old and good thing I had the extended Warranty. The camera had very light use and all of a sudden it would no longer read the memory card. The part needed was on back order and after 30 days they decided to write it off as a total loss.

This said I am now in need of a replacement. I would prefer to stay with Nikon as I have a Nikon lense. Which model would be comparable to the D200. I know that when I got the D200 it was being discontinued but I am not sure which model replaced it.
Thanks
Stu

The D300 was the replacement, followed by the 300s which shoots video. The D7000 is the one I would recommend though. I've used all of these plus the D700 full frame. The D7000 blows the 300 away if you need to use high iso,. It's quieter too, and has a focusing motor so you can use the older lenses.
The D7000 has a different menu set-up than the D200 and the mode button has been replaced by a dial which does not lock, my only real beef with the design. If you don't need high ISO you may be able to pick up a used D300 for a good deal at place like KEH though. The 300s has a bit better IQ than the 300.
Just checked the KEH site....they really like their D300s...pricier than I expected. If I'm not mistaken, the D90 has the same sensor as the D300s (and does video).

I too am using a D200 unknowingly bought it just prior to the release of the D300. It's working fine. So far, so good.

Having been a Nikon user for nearly 50 years, I'm about switch to Canon. I believe Canon has better optics and electronics and even the results I've seen from the Rebel
T3i. 18.2 mp are at the very least as good as, or superior to my D200. The resolution is great and the contrast is stunning.

The downside is I have about $10K invested in everything Nikon and the divorce and switch to Canon won't be pretty or inexpensive.

Well, Kaye, be sure to post your Nikon gear in the classified section. I'm sure there'll be some takers so you can recoup at least part of your investment.

I joined the group to reply to your question! I owned the D200 and I sold it and replaced it with the D300! I also bought the D300s and the D7000! The question has not been asked what you like to shoot! For wildlife I agree with the D7000 response, however for other photography like flowers, I disagree. I love to shoot multiple images, and Nikon shooters can do this "In Camera.". I prefer the D300 and the D300s for this reason. They will allow you to set the number of shots you wish to use for multiples! I use 10 shots quite often! The D7000 one allows a maximum if 3! Broke my heart when I realized this on a hike one day when I attempted to set the camera for a 10 image multiple exposure! That being said I take my D300s and my D7000 with me everywhere I go when shooting! My D300 has had little use, and I am considering turning it into an IR body. Waiting on Nikon to see what's next! Also I should add that I don't think there is a better focusing camera than the D7000! It rocks!

Can't beat the all around performance of the D7000 and It's Nikons best bang for your buck camera. It will give you all you need in a camera and then some. It also has a sealed weatherproof body. I believe B&H Photo has them on sale for $1096.00 including battery and charger. Bonus of free Sandisk 16GB class 10 card = $45-$50. Was just shopping around yesterday and this is what all reputable shops are selling the D7000 for. Anything much cheaper and be careful for scams.........

IMO the D7000 is a better bang for the buck at $2000 cheaper. I shoot alot of sports and the D800 just isn't fast enough for what I need. I really don't see anything on the D800 that the D7000 can't do, but yet it's $2000 more. Don't be fooled by the big number of MPs it has unless you're going to shoot wall size prints, plus I've heard there are problems with a recall already underway. I shoot nothing but Nikons and this recall with new models has become the norm with them. It seems like they use the consumer as their guinnie pigs---if you insist on buying one wait another 6 months........

Costco has a fabulous deal on the D5100 kit right now. $899 with the 18-55 and 55-300.

Not to belabor it but the D5100 takes the same pics as the D7000. I suppose if you do something that requires more than 4 frames per sec (I don't) or have a bunch of lenses that need the camera autofocus motor then something like the D7000 might be your ticket instead. You won't know what your missing without the D5100's articulated screen until you have owned and used a camera with one under different situations.
