On a trip to Peru, I was part of a group . We were on lake Titikaka, the highest lake in the world. On a boat excursion, one of the group dropped his camera in the lake. . I could see his eyes nearly popping. I tried to reassure him. "you still have your memories" Well if he could kill me without witnesses, he would have.. Years later I was on a boat excursion in Australia. Well the same thing happened to me. My Camera fell in the river. I followed my own lesson. I still enjoyed and remembered the trip.
Has that happened to you ?
How did you handle it.?.

No, it has never happened to me and I take pains to ensure that if it does, I do not lose all my photos. I change memory cards every day and I always carry a back up camera. It is most often no more than a point and shoot, but for once in a lifetime trips, I try to carry a second camera set up. These days I travel with a Sony mirrorless, so, I have a second body and a second lens. The second lens is not the equivalent of my first lens, but it is better than having nothing.

It's happened to me. We had a 3 month 15,000 mile trip in the U.S. through Fall 2011. (We did a figure of 8 - Tulsa, Portland, San Diego, Tulsa, Washington, Savannah, Tulsa) At La Jolla I went on a kayaking excursion out into the bay and over to the caves. The last photo on my Pentax W60 was of me on the S.O.T. taken by the leader. The camera was secured to the boat, but the strap broke! It actually came apart where the woven section was secured to the tie in a moulding. I hadn't downloaded the photos from the first few weeks and lost a lot of inflight shots etc. Fortunately, I didn't make the same mistake with my 60D.

Now I have my name and phone number(s) as the default screensaver on all of my cameras.

First SLR a Minolta SRT 202 got stolen after several years of use. Much newer cameras had come out and mine had been discontinued. I was angry at the loss but life goes on. Got a Minolta X-700 which is still nice but never felt totally right. Just got another SRT 202 and it is better then I remembered.

Perhaps I'm just careless... getting your film camera dunked is just the same as losing it- especially if its several days before you can tend to it... kayaks, canoes, long trails through thick brush...

Nikon F2 w/35mm… Kobuk River- Alaska
Canon Canonet QL… Clark’s Fork of the Yellowstone - Montana
Zeiss Icarex… w/135mm Trinity River - California
Canon S110 – Bayou Teche- Louisiana
Nikkormat w/50mm – somewhere between Sunshine and Cooper Landing- Alaska

I am paranoid about losing my camera and my images. When I travel for fun I just take a point-and-shoot camera. When I do photography travel I always take my P&S as a back-up and also to use in such situations as kayaking and rafting - I can keep it in a zip-lock bag and only remove it when things are calm enough for taking a shot.

If the camera were LOOSE no wonder he ended up losing it.

couple of ideas about trip camera/photo: always hang yours on your neck (or wrist if small P&S), use many low capacity cards (8gb instead of 64gb), and change them after each day, so that when you loose the camera, at least you still have the past shots, and of course, back up camera. This is my set up: a Nikon d300 with 18-200 lens, a Nikon d90 with 10-24, a sb800 flash, a Fuji s9200 and a Sony dsc-hx30v, plus spare batteries. For those river / beach / ocean exploring, a water proof camera is recommended, no mater how many zip bags / water tight bag you keep your camera in, it will get wet, and if it does, take your memory card + battery out the sooner the better, sun dry the camera or blow dry (no heat), then maybe you can use it again. My wife dropped my film pocket camera once at the beach, picked it up ok, but could not save film and camera. One more thing: on one of the trip to Russia, one man in the whole tour got his lens stolen right from his camera, that was his only lens ! So try to prevent this also. Good luck.

OK, you hold it... but hang on to your hat, too! 'cause afterward, you WILL have a story to tell... maybe not photos, but a story nonetheless...!!

Use a neck strap. If you fall in, then you go together.

It doesn't happen. I use two pocket Sony's and the wrist straps are ALWAYS around my wrist. I always carry two cameras, JUST IN CASE. By the way, the wrist straps are the floating kind, bright yellow. Again, Just in case.

I was canoeing with my mate; I was documenting the trip with a Ricoh GR1. We had just traversed a very deep lock, and I was just getting back in the canoe when- yes you guessed it- the damn thing shot out from under neath me, and i did a swallow dive into the lock! When I surfaced, I found myself hauled out by a hefty lockman, and stood on the side, dripping water and blood, holding a ruined
Ricoh. Apparently I had hit a submerged piece of ragged metal, hence the blood. Although I tried drying out the camera, it never worked again, pity, because it was a superb machine.

Not yet. I always have a camera attached by neck strap or wrist strap.
