Would like to know how many Canon EOS users, change their Picture Styles Default Settings ? Like in "Standard" or "Landscape" mode, do you ever increase/decrease the Sharpness, Contrast, Saturation & Color Modes, depending on the surroundings (Day/Night/Cloudy etc, etc) of the photos being taken ?..Just wondering....

For the 'portrait' mode, I increased the sharpness. I can't remember when I last used this mode but I remember making the change when setting up the camera.

I have changed all of the default setting on the Picture Styles in my Canon 550D. I found the default setting to be too flat and too soft.

I downloaded ones from the web but after messing with them I don't really use them...I prefer to have a neutral file and evaluate it in post.

So you're not one of those who wants to get everything perfect in camera? lol

I was doing the same thing to every picture in post-processing, so why not just change it in camera. Now I only have to process about 50% of the pictures I take. Frees up lots of time for photography and blogging.

I save it for post because I like the flexibility...I don't want to do some standard sharpening or saturation/color adjustment only to find out that I don't like it when seen large on the monitor. I have standard presets for many different situations; portraits of women, portraits of men, landscape, B&W, street...they all need a different tweak but there is consistency for each type of shot.

Plus, with Lightroom processing repetitive adjustments is only a button push away.

For example; on my recent "lemon in the soda water" shot, I processed the first one how I like it. color, saturation, sharpness, crop, cloned out the dirt spots in the fizz water.

Then I selected all the other shots and sync'd all the changes to them...right down to the dirt spot locations and the crop.

Doing all 40 shots took about 20 seconds once the first one was complete; which took about 2 minutes.

For me...I like it that way and I'm comfortable working that way.

I make changes in DPP, I can see the change and evaluate it as I go along, one of the reasons I shoot RAW + Jpg, Bob.

I have changed at times yes specially for sunsets and some equine shots. I was given this tip from a photographer I met on location. It makes some difference I usually take the same shot with and without.
I have a canon400D. And a 7D (new audition)

I find it helpful and love playing specialy after help from the photographer.
Have fun and good luck

@ wtw2143 ~ I've been shooting in the manual mode since about Jan-Feb of this year and also doing 'RAW + Jpeg' process. If I'm shooting on a cloudy day, I'll change my white balance to "cloudy". If I forget to set the camera that way, then I'll change it when I process my RAW image. I like to experiment with the different settings on my camera. I've come to like shooting in the "Manual" mode much better, since I can control how much light I need for the shot. I shoot with a Canon EOS 60D.

@ magicunicorn ~ Hello! When I was doing a photo project recently, with my shooting buddy, for one of my camera clubs ~ we tried experimenting with the white balance setting for the lighting to make the sky look much different than the normal type of sunset or evening sky. We used the "Tungsten" setting and got quite a dramatic blue-purple looking sky as the result. If you want a more sunset looking kind of sky, just play around with the shutter speed and the ISO speed. I've been shooting in Manual mode for quite some time now & rarely use any of the presets anymore although I'll use the aperture mode once in awhile. When I find the photo again, I''ll post it ~ can't remember what folder I put it into. :(

Don't forget that Picture Styles only apply to JPG images - if you use raw files, they don't matter.

Since I shoot 90+% raw image the only thing that I regularly change is the color temperature to corespond to light conditions.
Everything else is done in post production.

When and if I do change 'Picture Style', I'll do it in Canon's DPP Program but never in camera

I shoot a Rebel XS and a t1i. In both cameras I have boosted the contrast by two points but that's all I have done. I shoot mostly in Program or TV at 1/200 and leave it there at 200 ISO for all shooting situations.

I've never been disappointed by either color or contrast since I made that simple contrast change.
