When my wife took our bichon in for therapy dog training, she also had to take training. The therapy animal program in Minnesota requires the animal+human to be a team. This is partly due to the position taken my the health institutions. She and Dinah must requalify every two years. What is the deal in your State.
Basically the same - since my wife and I are both taking the class we each have to pass the test with the dog. They actually issue and "badge" that shows the dog and human that are certified. There are several organizations available in CT and we are going through Intermountain Therapy Animals which provides the class (not required) and does the testing. The provide mentors and also liability insurance. Recertification is every two years. They have placements in hospitals of course as well as schools and even college campuses during mid-terms and finals.
I hope she enjoys it but even if she doesn't it's great training.
