All Hoggers,
Use would be on a D750, outdoors or in good lighting...only.
I don't really need the extended reach of the 300 vs. the 200. I have legs and could move closer.
Does anyone have experience on both lenses with an FX body?
Good deals are plentiful on the 28-200 but the 28-300 commands a different market. I won't say that "money is no object" but I already own my dream lenses and I'm looking for something to take on vacation to pack lightly. Having said that, I'm looking at used, excellent condition lenses.
Any and all input would be great and is appreciated! Thank you.
The 24-85 is a great choice for most uses.
It remains on my D800 90% of the time since I got it. I now only use the 28-300 on my D5300 when I want a one lens solution.

Mark - I have both of the lenses and use them on a D610. I like the size and weight of the 28-200 G and it stays on that camera most of the time. I put on the 28-300 when I need the extra reach or the VR. Note: I'm just a snapshooter/event recorder and not a pixel-peeper and hardly do any PP and only shoot jpegs. I've had canvas prints made up to 18x28 and they look just fine to me. Cheers, chase

Chase4,
That is exactly the kind of input I'm looking for. Depending on the subject, I typically shoot JPEG. I will shoot in RAW but I consider the subject matter beforehand.
Based on your experience, the 200 is sharp?

It's sharp enough for me. If maximum sharpness is important to my shot, such as portrait or a landscape photo, I'll use one of my several prime lenses, tripod, remote release, etc. But for an all-around decent lens that focuses reasonably close and being an AF lens the autofocus is just average speed however it does the job. The other lens that I often use on the D610 is my Nikkor 28-105 D that will take images to half lifesize 1:2 and seems a bit sharper (subjective only, not tested). Hope this helps and good luck. chase

P.S. Make sure that your Distortion Control Data from nikonusa.com is up to date for your camera. chase

Only the 28-300mm which is a prosumer grade lens... It does very well at f/8 to f/11 (only) all the way out to 300mm
However I rarely use it after obtaining a 200-400mm f/4 which is a pro grade lens and walks past the 28-300mm in every aspect (being razor sharp at f/4 though f/11) albeit diffraction begins at above f/16...
btw, the 28-300mm is soft below f/8 and diffraction begins at f/14
Here's DxOmark's Sharpness Map for the D750 with a 28-300mm
https://www.dxomark.com/Lenses/Nikon/AF-S-NIKKOR-28-300mm-f-3.5-5.6-ED-VR-mounted-on-Nikon-D750---Measurements__975As for the 28-200mm G lens? It's plastic mount I won't trust for a second on my D3x... Nope only metal mounts consider here...
Here are two examples of the 28-300mm... the first on a D3x and the second on a D3
Hope this helps...
or is at least food for thought...
I have the 28-300 but I don't use it on FX body; it is most always on my D7200. I got Nikon 28-300 because I also have Canon EF 28-300L and wanted same focal length in Nikon. Quality wise, the Nikon lens is nice but not nearly as nice as the Canon.

Hi, I did a lot of research between both options here and felt it was a toss up until I saw this video.

I really like my old (no VR) 28-200. It's light weight and focuses to 18" all through the zoom range. Take care &...
