Would have been an excellent shot, but focus was far off.

To me the real subject of the photo is the water and the sunrise reflecting on it so the somewhat blurred image of the bird in flight works for me.

Your eye is drawn to the bird first and that becomes the subject. The eye is always drawn to the lightest object in the photograph.

You don't know my eye. You can only speak to your eye. Mine is drawn to the most outstanding feature of the image which is the beauty of the sunrise reflecting on the water.

The object is to improve photography and I was not criticizing you, but it is a standard art and photography practice and would be critiqued as such. Your opinions are your own and I don't have the right to step on your opinion, however unless you are a judge of photography and can offer proof that I am wrong I stand by my statement.

I don't need to prove you wrong. As you stated my opinions are my own as is yours. With respect to photography judges, judging photography is not a science. It is subjective therefore a photography judge is judging a photograph through his/her own set of likes/dislikes and biases.

Funny - I read the link and noticed one section referred to the use of light. The sunrise bouncing off the water is precisely what drew my eye in the image.

Ok, so you see the water before the bird.

There are some shots we take that we wish were better ... unfortunately wishing doesn't make it so. The bird is out of focus and altho you want to call attention to the sun on the water, it looks like you were photographing the bird. If you were photographing the sun on the water, you should have waited a second or so for the bird to get out of the picture.

The bird is either landing or taking off so some blur is ok but bright reflection of the sunrise on the water is the crowning glory of this image. The image would not be as interesting without the bird but to me the bird is complementary but not the primary subject.

Back focusing and it is never OK for a main subject.

You say tomauto - I say tomato. It's still a piece of fruit.
