Maybe a dumb question but ALL THINGS, glass, stabilization, etc. considered, how much sharper will an image made with a Canon 5DS-R be than one made with a 5DS ($1,000 less) than one made with a Canon 24.2 mp crop sensor body (about $700 these days).

That is something you probably need to call Canon about.

You can watch submissions here and see the differences. It is not just pixel counts - my 6D (full frame)has about the same pixel count as my APS-C ("crop sensor") 70D, but the photographs are far more sharp.

The better trained, educated, practiced, experienced photographer, the better the photographer. Please notice I said nothing about equipment making the photographer better.

Sharpness isn't everything.

Read comparisons and specs, and decide what features are important to you.

The 5DS is very sharp, Regis here in the forum has been posting eagle shots taken with that camera, but he is also using about a $10,000 lens on it, but his shots are quite amazing. I just purchased the 5D Mk IV because although 50MP is quite tempting, the Dynamic range on that camera is not as good as the new 5D, something to consider. I shoot birds in flight and want to be able to push the ISO without making the images too grainy, same with night landscapes, it is not always about which is sharpest.

Where do you see a difference of $1000 between the 5DS-R and the 5DS? Normally it's about $200.
Here is a test I did that you may be interested in: I shot the same identical scene, same lens, settings, etc, etc, from a tripod with both my 7DII (APS-C, 20mp) and my 5DIV (FF, 30mp). I then cropped and enlarged the FF shot to match the APS-C shot. I wanted to see if the increase in mp of the FF would produce results equal to the APS-C. It didn't. The cropped and enlarged FF shot showed a definite lack of IQ compared to the APS-C shot. The 50mp 5DS should fare better against the 24.2mp but will still lose some IQ.
Even so, if I had to choose between the two I would definitely go with the 5DS.
A lot would also depend on whether or not you have, or will have, the lenses to get the best out of the 5DS.

5DS and 5DSr are sort of niche specialized cameras. They are very good at what they do but not as general purpose machines that many people are looking for everyday shooting. You also need to have good glass to go with that resolution. I have also read that some owners end up shooting them with 30mb files to reduce the file size. Don't need 50mb for every shot I guess...

Best,
Todd Ferguson
