Suggestions for week in Umbria.

My wife and I are going to Umbria region in central Italy for a week in early April. We will be staying near Todi and taking day drives around Umbria and southern Tuscany. Looking for suggestions for any particularly picturesque villages or scenes within 1 ½ - 2 hour drive of Todi. That would include a wide arc including Orvieto, Civita, Sorano, Montepulciano, Arezzo, Cortona, Assisi, Spoleto and possibly up into the mountains to Castellucio. What will the landscape look like at that time of year? We were in Tuscany a couple of years ago in October and much of the landscape was freshly ploughed. Beautiful in itself, but I am hoping for some more greenery in April. Will there still be snow on the mountains?

Did that trip 3 years ago, also in October - Take plenty of SD cards! Some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. A picture around every corner. Castles, forts and churches everywhere. Enjoy!

Have you heard of Location Scout? This website contains images all over the world that was taken by people like us who traveled and shared their beautiful photos and locations where it been shot. I used this website for photos inspiration and planning my vacation.
There are lots of beautiful places in the world and you don't need to leave the comfort of your own home to enjoy the scenery.

Beautiful picture Catalex. Thanks for the link to Location Scout. This looks like a great site. Having a bit of trouble getting the pictures to open up when I click on the markers on the map, but I will figure it out. Beautiful pictures on that site - just what I was looking for. Thanks so much.

We stayed in Poppi for a couple of weeks a decade or so ago, found La Verna - Franciscan Sanctuary and Anghiari to be interesting and worth visiting, alongside local hangouts and longer trips. Arrezzo had some great restaurants in the old square, but we preferred the smaller towns for a local ambiance.

Have fun!

April will be a lovely time of the year to visit Umria and all the Springtime vegetation and flowers etc will be on display. There will be snow on the mountain tops and don't forget it will still cold at higher levels.
All those places will be lovely places to visit, but don't try go to too many in one day, I would say two at the most so you can explore on foot not miss anything.
Get a good large scale map of the area and use it to plan your trips, do not use a SatNav for touring and allow plenty of time for your tours.
Have a great trip and take lots of photographs.

Thanks John. My Michelin map arrived yesterday. Michelin maps show scenic routes so you can plan your drives. I agree with you about the SatNav (GPS) especially in Italy. I had one on my last trip and it was useless. Every town or village you enter has a series of rotaries or roundabouts. Italian street names are so long and grandious that by the time the GPS has finished giving you directions for the first rotary you are already at the third one. Cellphone directions are better but they use a lot of data.

Thanks Peter. Anghiari looks interesting and within range. Might try to get to La Verna also. I was educated by the Franciscans so I might discover a spiritual connection.

Thanks Sony A580. This will be my sixth trip to Italy. We usually only get to spend 3-4 days there so a full week will give more time to stop and take it in.
As you say- a picture around every corner.

I would definitely go to La Verna - a spectacular ancient cliff top monastery. How often do you get the chance to visit one of those and it predates St. Francis and Assisi. We drove up there in the fog early one morning and disturbed a wild boar which gave us a dirty look, and ran off into forest. It was shrouded in cloud and just amazing.

Thanks MtnMan. I am a big fan of Rick Steves. Never gone wrong with any of his recommendations. However, he doesn't get much into photo opportunities which is what I am really looking for.

Also you will have fun with Italian driving conventions and habits! They all want to get their first and will overtake on blind hairpin bends...

You do drive a stick shift, don't you?

After our visit we worked out why Boston drivers have the reputation that they do, the interbreeding of the Italians and the Irish which combined two significant cultural attributes!

Hope you have lots of fun!
