wow!! corky your shots of that gorgeous pileated woodpecker are awesome! what a thrill
it had to be to get those shots....terrific set!! enjoyed your story too!!

I really appreciate the kind words and the two thumbs up, Merry, and sometimes you never know There was shredded wood around several stumps, but had never seen the Pileated Woodpecker around them and since that one occasion haven't seen him return, but he very easily could have while we were not paying attention are not at home. We are still seeing the beautiful Baltimore Oriole most days and makes our day at each sighting! I have enjoyed viewing your beautiful recent posts, and have been trying tp take a decent image of a little Downy, but most are on the suet cake or positioned on the sides of trees, where only their back is visible, although that little red spot on the male's head really stands out. I do have some pretty fair images of the Red-bellied, but in every good one the green hook which holds the mealworm basket is visible! Oh well that gives me the excuse to try again! Thanks again and take care!

Fantastic Corky. I have only seen a couple of these in my entire life, never a shot.

Nice pictures. We have a lot of these at Morrow Mountain State Park in North Carolina and you are right, the do not like their pictures taken. Well done.

Many thanks for the kind words and for responding, KayakingUSA and that about the closest that I've been to them. We also have a few around here and most days I will hear one, even if it's not sighted. The Morrow Mountain State Park sounds like a great place to visit and do any Red-headed Woodpeckers reside there? We used to have a few, but haven't seen one for years! Take care!

Thanks Bill, and although not really common I will usually hear at least hear one sometimes during the day! They really seem to love carpenter ants and grubs and are not very appreciated by homeowners with cedar sided homes, as they will damage the siding to retrieve the young wood eating larva that hatched from carpenter bees which drills a hole through the surface of the siding and deposit their eggs! Thanks again and take care!

I can count on probably 1 hand the number of times over the past 25 years I've been lucky enough to spot one of these magnificent birds. They are very wary for sure. I did manage to get some photos a couple of years ago during the Audobon Winter Census count back in CT. Awesome shots. Thanks for posting.

Many thanks, gigallager, but had failed to see your reply until tonight when I noticed several other had replied and happen to go up the list a little to double check and read your very nice reply! They are not really that plentiful, but most days I will hear one, even if I don't see any. I do worry about their future numbers, because they really need old dead trees to supply their diet of carpenter ants, and other similar insects and grubs found in dead wood. and they also hollow out those trees for nesting! We live along a little tidal river with many bald cypress and similar trees, but even here much land has been cleared in the past century. Thanks again, and take care!

Nice, sharp capture. We occasionally see some pileated around here, but frequently hear them in the deep woods. I've a few photos but none of this quality.

Great shots Corky,

Thanks for looking Val and really appreciate the three thumbs! We have been very busy doing yardwork and potting annuals and also working and replacing flowers in our perennial garden that we started last year, and of course, Bella, our little Jack Russell in much help! Thanks again and take care!
