Full frame, wide angle, good flash.

A couple weeks ago I had the opportunity to photograph the largest "residential" pipe organ in the world. I'm not sure why it's designated residential as no one actually lives there. This organ has 10 thousand and 10 pipes and an automated grand piano in several enclosed chambers. It is an awesome instrument.

Got a couple of an old church pipe organ about ten years ago as part of the "detail" shots of a wedding I covered.

Look for the main organ player and ask him/her what is most important about the organ and make sure that gets photographed! Then do a few general short with and without the player.

It's most likely going to be in a lower light area so be prepared for that. Look for an overall shot, close shots, detail shots and the unusual shots, just like you'd do for people shots. If you decide on a flash/strobe be sure it does not reflect or over shine on shiny parts like the sound tubes, assorted metal parts, shiny or polished things, etc. (Common sense stuff!)

A macro of the front with some old fashion music and/or with the player's hand(s) on the keyboard would look kind of neat also. As some say... "play it be ear!"

Are you doing formal documentation or are you creating art for yourself?

This problem was raised two years ago, and my response may be of value to you. See my post of 1/17/2015 on page 21 of my posts. Have had a very long lifetime of close association with pipe organs and organists.

This organ was found in a home and moved to this renovated theater in East Greenville Pa. The two guys that own the theater are members of our historical society. We have our Christmas party there. They show all kinds of films there. When they show films from long ago they bring a guy down from New York that is really good at playing with the films. Behind the screen is all the pipes, the drums and othrt thimgs controlled at the organ.

Isn't the largest in Atlantic City near the boardwalk someplace?

I'm not totally sure but... a residential pipe organ has pipes only and where as a theater pipe organ has parts all over the building and includes all kinds of other instruments. Sort of like a glockensfiel. (SP???) They were used to make sounds for silent movies.

A true pipe organist might be able to clear this up for you, (and me).

All I recall is the story about the Choir Leader who chased the Pastor around the church and finally caught him by the organ.

This one is for me, though I will send the best images along to the organist.

Get the widest angle lens you can find. Macro would be better. Use a tripod. Long shutters are to be expected. Be very patient. Enjoy yourself and the place you are in.

Thanks fir that. That shoot never panned out though. Now I have the chance to do it right. Kyle, the Canon Organist and Choir Master is a great guy and will provide some back ground.

I don't know about the largest, but there is one in an old theater in Tampa Fl. that raises out of the floor. It was, and still is amazing.
They do tours of the theater and play the organ during the tours. The keyboard for this organ rises out of the floor of the stage while being played.

Here is the history of the theater. I'm hoping to get some photos of this in the very near future.

Is this at the Biltmore Estate?
If so it is very large and a camera mounted flash might work or not.
I would try it or use a tripod and no flash.
