I would love to have the Canon 50mm lens. BUT, here is my dilemma. I have read numerous reviews on Amazon about this lens. There are 2 choices. 50mm f/1.8 for approx. $105 OR the 50mm f/1.4 for approx. $360. The reviews for the f/1.8 are way over 1000 people. Now half of those people report that the f/1.8 actually falls apart for no apparent reason other than the fact that it is all plastic and the construction is very poor. The other half have had no problems and continue to use it. As a matter of fact, they praise the image quality SO much. I have never read such good reviews about any other lens as much as this one. On the other hand, the f/1.4 has much better quality 'construction' and even better glass. It also has a metal ring.
Here is my question to any of you that have the f/1.8. Has YOURS fallen apart?(they say it doesn't matter how carefully you handle this lens) It just falls apart; even after just ONE use.
I would welcome ANY comments about either lens. Thank you in advance if you share experience with me.

check with popphoto.com click on buyers guide. besides field tests they also do lab tests. if there was such a problem popphoto would have found it and reported on it. they are very unbiased. Have Nikon so can't help you directly. can say that my Nikon 50mm f1.8d is relatively inexpensive, not plastic, and one of my favorite lenses. prime lenses rule. good luck.
I have both lens, the 1.8 and the 1.4. I had the 1.8 for about 4 months before it stopped focusing properly and making a grinding noise. Canon promptly replaced it.
I am very careful with the handling of my cameras and lens. The micro motor just gave out. The photo quality with this lens is very good especially for the money. You can buy 3 of them for the price of the 1.4.
Why did I then get the 1.4? I prefer to have FTM (fulltime manual focus) and I think the blurred background is more pleasing (to me) on the 1.4.
Both of the lens give good results. If you are going to use the 50mm lens very much, you probably will want the 1.4 and if you are just wanting to see what a 50mm prime lens can do for you then the 1.8 may work great for you.
Usually it's best to get the more expensive lens of whatever
brand you can afford. They have to make less expensive lenses
for sales.... but what is sacrificed for price is build quality....
not necessarily optics. It stands to reason that an inexpensive
lens HAS to be made inexpensively.... these companies are
out to make money.... they have to. In this I am refering to "normal" brands not cult cameras such as Leica.

I've had the "plastic fantastic" 50mm for years. Stopped down a little it's not a bad portrait lens for 3/4 and full length shots.
Every time I pick it up, I can't figure out how it manages to capture decent images, but it does, and it keeps on tickin'
That and the 85mm 1.8 are my two fave people lenses.
Maybe it'll break. I certainly won't cry as I order another.

Hey Doc ..... go get the 1.8 ..... you'll thank me in the morning
Goodness, what else do you need to know? If you already
got 500 people saying it falls apart why do you need more info?
It's a piece of crap.
If you want your sox blown off, check into the lens I posted above. Isn't a 50mm on your camera really a 70-75mm?

Um, no it's not. In fact, it's considered one of the great values out there for Canon shooters. You did read that they have a Canon, right? The whole point of that 50 on a crop body is that it IS a short tele and a nice for portrait work.
The biggest whiners about the lens have never used it (et tu?), and just object to the fact that something that cheap could be worth anything.
Honestly, in Canon fit primes, the only other lens I'd dump it for is the 1.2 50mm and that's merely 15 times it's cost.

I have never had any lens from a major manufacturer fall apart on me!
If value is the important thing : so be it. Buy it.
But there is a big difference 'twixt value and price.
