I am not an expert, so let me tell you what I know from looking at these storage devices....Simply put: These storage devices are a case or container holding one or more hard drives. In some instances these hard drives are specially made for this application. They also have an electronic mechanism that runs (internal to the device), software to control how the information is stored. Such as RAID 1 (mirroring) or other configurations. The WD My Book encrypts the data that you send to it and the WD My Cloud does not. In the case of the WD My Book, if the mechanism or the software in the case fails there is NO way to recover the data. Not even removing the hard drives and putting them into a different, but same case. WD will not recover the data or help you with this problem.

Also, if this helps.....The WD My book is a device that you connect directly to your computer and it reads like another drive (or even a jump drive). It is accessable only when connected physically to a computer. The WD cloud drive can be connected remotely from anywhere you can use the internet. Say that you are at a clients office and you need something stored back in your office on your cloud drive. You can sign on remotely and bring up the document or photo. You can't do that with the WD My Book.

Like I said in the beginning here, I am not an expert on this. I have been checking these out and have some knowledge about it. If someone can correct me or add to this feel free to jump in.....................I will learn too !!

What you've said is correct. I think people have misconstrued my saying that I use the WD MyCloud as a backup. That is not exactly true. I use it to backup my away from home shooting. This gets a copy of all of the images I shot while out of town back to my computer system in the office. It is a "backup" in the since that if something happens to my external usb drive that I use in conjunction to my laptop while on location, I have a copy of my data at home. While this is an important part of my travel backup, it is not a large part of my home backup.
Once I return home from a location shoot, I copy the images from my WD Cloud to my local drive and then I import them to Lightroom for indexing and processing. Once they are on my main system, then they are backed up along with everything else and that copy goes into the backup routine. NOTE: I do not believe in "incremental" backups. They depend on the previous backups being correct and only backup data that has changed or been added since the last backup. I do full and complete backups each time. I realize that this is the slow way to do backups but it is (in the long run) the most sure way to have the best possible chance of success. If you have to do a recovery, you want a complete copy of the system at the last point of backup AND you don't want your backups so far a part that you are loosing days or months of data. My backups are Monday Wednesday and Friday. This means that the most data I could loose are from the end of backup on Monday to the start of backup on Wed. The end of backup on Wed to the start of backup on Friday and (the longest period which is my slowest shooting time) the end of backup on Friday to the start of backup on Mon. Basically, the max I would loose is 3 days of work. This means that I save my memory cards for that period of shooting and don't format the cards until that backup is verified. (Note: this is something else that is often overlooked. VERIFY that your backups are valid and complete). There is nothing like the feeling when your system crashes and then you find that your backup(S) are no good.

Quick reply....... and someone may have already suggested this.... But for varying different costs, you can have your own website with SmugMug.com SmugMug allows unlimited storage of full resolution images. You can create Folders, and within those folders you can create Galleries. I think the tier level is like 7 deep. Now, that you store your images there.... you can also have them professionally printed at reasonable costs. There are tons of other advantages.... and yes, you do pay, but if you are looking for a way to store images in a logical manner.... (MS Explorer is not logical) and have an ability to share those Galleries with friends/family .... then you may want to consider SmugMug....

Also.... the multi-TB units on your desk is a great idea, as most computers can't hold all of our images.... I mean, in a few years a multi-TB storage unit can easily be full.

Good luck!

WD My Book on my little network, also backed up in the cloud AND keep a backup copy of all data in my safe deposit box -- not being paranoid, just safe...

When it comes to backup, you can't be too paranoid.

I use a current year external drive that I copy to a 5TB external drive with all of my photos and retain the annual drives. My most important backup is SmugMug.com full resolution JPEGs of all of my best / family photos backed up to Amazon storage for $60 a year for the power plan with unlimited storage and a great website to share pictures with my family and friends since they can download any picture they want. If I want all the pictures from a gallery on my work computer, I click on download gallery and SmugMug sends me a link to download a zip file of all of the photos. Offsite storage and photo sharing at a site I trust for a reasonable price. I have 20,000 pictures there and can pull up any one I want on my phone or computer whenever I want. I originally signed up to share pictures from my step daughter's wedding and love the site.
