Rumor has it that this will work:
http://www.phottix.com/en/wireless-remotes/phottixr-cleon-ii.html. They have other models, but I know nothing about their compatibility or reliability.

My suggestion is to check and double-check. If memory serves me the D3100 does not have the ability to accept a remote release device. It has come up on this forum before, and I just checked nikonusa.com website and they show no remote function on the D3100, unfortunately. For some purposes you can use the self-timer function (to release the shutter without introducing vibration to the camera).
Perhaps someone will correct me if I'm wrong. My D5100 has remote ability, but I'm pretty sure D3100 does not.

Correct: there is no Nikon wireless remote for the D3100, but it looks like there is at least one available from another source.

The D3100 only works with a wired remote shutter release. Right after I bought my D3100, I researched and found a Vivitar remote that was compatible with my camera. It works great and had an infrared adaptor. It was $37 from B&H. Their customer service will direct you to the right product.

Buy a battery grip which also incorporates an infra-red remote control. The only limitation is that the single sensor is situated on the front of the grip. Still better than none at all.

I have a D5100 and it has has front and rear infra-red sensors I also bought a battery grip with a remote control which works via the camera's sensors as well as the grip sensor, so no need to install the lead that connects the grip to the camera to use the remote control. The cable is needed to make use of the shutter button on the grip. I personally don't bother with it. The big advantage of the grip is extra battery power and being able to change batteries without removing the camera from a tripod

This is the description of the wireless remote I purchased for my D3100from B & H Photo (It doesn't look like they stock it anymore):

Vivitar WIRELESS SHUTTER RELEASE f/NIKON D90 - VIWSRN390

This is the equivalent remote available at Amazon.com for $19.99:

http://www.amazon.com/SERIES-Equivalent-MC-DC2-Wireless-Cameras/dp/B004MAV6N4/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1338724102&sr=8-15

The only complaint I have about mine is that it plugs in a little tight. But, other than that, it works great!

I use a remote release also.
Heres the product info on the one I have :
The manufacturer is:
YONGNU wireless flash trigger,..(made in China)
I use it strictly as a remote trigger for my Nikon D300 on my tripod,...not for flash.
The YONGNU Model I have is #RF-602/N.
I saw a YouTube video about one and decided to try it.
I must say it works quite well,.very convenient..comes in handy in freezing winter temperatures making exposures from inside my warm coat pocket.
The stated effective range I believe is 300 feet.
The product is camera specific so check and see if your camera is compatible.
I purchased mine thru Amazon for around $35.00 last year.
As I said YouTube has a demo video you can watch.
Hope this info helps,...the others suggested sound interesting too. Always good to have a selection before parting with the $$$$
Also,...See this past post below ,...others are suggested here.
Hope this is helpful.

I think we all answered his question. Though not supported, there are viable options for a wireless remote for the D3100. Sometimes you can get quick answers here without googling . . . and it's nice to get sound advice from seasoned amateurs and professionals that the information you've seen on google is accurate
