If I use the money I just got from the insurance company of the guy who hit my car's bumper to buy a new tripod, instead of fixing the banged up bumper, is that G.A.S., or just a good idea?
Only trouble is: a new tripod won't help maintain the value of your vehicle...just sayin'...

But she could take really good pictures of her banged up bumper! I am with Danilo on this one
I think you might need a 12 step program.
Will the new tripod help you earn enough to get a new car? Then go for it!
Who needs bumpers? Use gaffer tape on it. (bumper not camera in place of a tripod). You fix the bumper it just gets bashed again!!!

Will it pass inspection? Then go ahead, but otherwise - the 10-step is a good idea !

Guess it depends on how long you plan on keeping the car. And it's value. If it is an older car that the value isn't worth anything, when I would go for the tripod. If it is safe the way it is! Show us a picture. :)

If you need the money to fix your car to buy a tripod, then I don't think photography is the hobby for you

I see you are not addicted to photography and how do you know if it a matter of cost or just good judgment.
Screw the bumper buy the tripod.

Here's the solution: buy the tripod. Duct tape it to the car where the bumper used to be. Use the bumper as a fancy-dancy tripod. Geeeeez! Must I tell you guys everything??
It's your money. Use it for what you wish. If it's enough for a weekend in Vegas, then do that too!

Then you might (LOL) win enough to buy a tripod and a new car!!!!

Perhaps, you didn't understand my original post was a bit "tongue-in-cheek", like the others did?
Let it be known the model 1996 car already had a few other bumps and bruises for the miles but is very drivable and the bumper is still able to protect me and mine inside :-)
I'm not a guy who's really into cars....
While the gear I have already was a bit of a financial stretch, I am thankful for digital photography, versus the film and processing costs that would probably be too expensive as a hobby for me.
I'm actually leaning towards buying a Fuji X100 for street and using the basic and almost insufferable ratcheting tripod I have a while longer, since I don't use a tripod all that much compared to how often I wish I had the X100 out in the world when the D7000 can't tag along.
