Thanks,

Al, The lens is made by Panasonic to Leica's specs. Not made by Leitz in Germany.

it is a leica design.my guess is some license agreement. The ZS 50 is discontinued. It has been replaced by the ZS60.Check B&H photo they have a refurbished ZS50. Also, you may want to read the unbiased reviews.

Costco has the ZS50 on sale for $299.00, is that a good price?
Do you know what What the difference is between to 50 & 60?

Thanks, AL

Perhaps because it's by Leica, not from Leica? Their design and specs but actually made by Panasonic.

Leica has supplied lenses for Panasonic cameras in the past. Panasonic does make Leica Lenses in Japan.
They must comply with Leica standards and are paid royalties.

No, that's not a good price - B&H has refurbished ones for $249.00. I bought one and like it for what it does well: long lens, pocketable. I don't like the fact that ISO auto is not available in M mode and that in M mode the LCD shows a view of the scene that does not reflect the aperture/shutter set, that only comes up when you half press button to focus. Otherwise in PAS modes it performs "normally."

My ZS50 is my old faithful carry around pocket camera. I have been pleased with its performance in all categories. I think you will too. Amazon.com currently has it starting at $284.00 so the Costco deal is a good one overall. I also like Costco's unquestioned 60 day return policy. So you have a lot of time to learn and play around with your new toy and still return it if unsatisfied for any reason. I say go for it!!!

I bought this camera last month in Costco for $249. It sells for alot more on Amazon, so even $299 is a good price. So far I like the camera. I use it when it is impractical to carry alot of gear.

I've had the ZS50 for 18 months or so and the only negative I'd mention is the ridiculous (720 mm?) zoom. Even with stabilization, it's nearly impossible to get a decent handheld image at half that range. If you need that reach, you need a good tripod, and if you're carrying a tripod, you might as well carry a bigger machine with better glass. The later ZS models went to a more reasonable zoom range.

Great little camera. I take it everywhere when I don't have or don't want to carry my Pentax DSLR with me. I've had mine that I bought at Costco when it was on sale for $249 a few months ago. The only real negative so far is no battery charger provided, but that is easily remedied by buying an inexpensive after-market wall charger that I got with 2 extra batteries for only about $10 -- I always carry extra batteries with me for any camera I have. The 2 extra batteries fit in the bottom of the carrying case that comes with the ZS 50.

You say scrap the ZS50 for the ZS60 - What does the ZS60 offer (besides touch screen) that the ZS50 does not?
