I like it BECAUSE it breaks the rules. I am pretty sure I would not have thought to shoot it this way. You've captured distance and perspective but in an off-balance and original way that makes us look again, to figure it out.

I'd probably run a reverse gradient filter on the bottom to get more visibility in the detail around the nearer poles.

Thanks. An old photographer friend of mine told me the one rule in photography he used, and that was, that there are no rules.

A book I always recommend to people is "The Tao of Photography" it encompasses a new way of looking at things, "seeing beyond seeing".

Pilings from a long gone cannery on west coast. While taking other shots I noticed the pilings were basically all the same height, bent down and found the horizon slotted right into the pilings, click!

Yes it was a cold day!

Wow an interesting subject! I think this is a scene you can go back to and study/shoot again over time. I love those scenes!

The shot in the OP felt odd to me, as a viewer (R brain stuff here). So I wonder is it because the horizon is slightly below the tops of the piers? I like the leading line of pier posts sort of right of center but leading me to what? (Left brain said all that).

The 2nd shot I liked better but something was still off. I think there are two conflicting sets of leading lines, one goes to the far right and the other into the scene. My feeble mind was confused.

So IMHO, yes this scene has a lot of potential, if it were me, I'd go back and work it more, and try some different points of view and when I found one that resonated with me, I would then go back and shoot from that spot during the golden hour. And the blue hour. And maybe again as the seasons change. Yes that is a lot of work. Such is our Art. Just saying.
