Windows to Chromebook with Picasa included

Hello. I have happily used Google's Picasa for my editing and saving for several years. It is simple, quite elaborate, and I am very happy with it. I cannot use something like Photoshop because it is too complicated. Lately, I have become convinced I should stop using and suffering with Microsoft's Windows 7. I intend to purchase a Chromebook.

This brings me to this post's problem. It seems Chrome will not accept the use of Picasa. Chrome will accept many Windows programs but not my Picasa. I do not want to lose all my photos. Can anyone help me with a way to transfer my Picasa items to something Chrome will accept? I am not a computer genius, so please use simple terms. Thank you.

First, please clarify if you are talking about photos on your computer that you've edited in Picasa, or are you talking about photos online that you uploaded to the Picasa site (which I believe is now called Google Photos).

There are several photo editing apps for Chromebook. The newer Chromebooks have more storage space, so it could be possible for you to store a certain number of photos on your Chromebook, but for editing, you will need to use an online application.

Regarding Chromebook being able to "accept many Windows programs," can you give some examples?

This can be confusing: the term "Chrome" can refer to the web browser (like Internet Explorer) or the Chromebook's operating system (Google's version of Windows). A Chromebook is the laptop/computer-like machine that runs on Chrome operating system and comes already installed with the Google Chrome web browser.

Thank you, Linda. I am talking about my own photos that I downloaded to my computer, then edited in Picasa, and saved there. The rumors I have heard state Chrome will not accept a download of Picasa, which means I must keep a Windows machine in order to save and edit my own photos. I do not download anything from the Internet so that is not a problem.

One of the confusing aspects to Picasa is that you can open it and see your edits, but they aren't actually part of the image until you save. And also there are no photos in Picasa. They are all on your computer's hard drive. So if you were to uninstall Picasa, you won't lose any photos (just some potential edits regarding "save" - see my note below).

As long as you're willing to try out the online photo editors that are compatible with a Chromebook, you do not need to keep a Windows machine. And please know that a Chromebook is designed primarily for online use.

Depending on the storage space of your new Chromebook and how many photos you have, you may need to move some of your photos to thumb drives (USB); or if you buy a Chromebook with an SD card slot, you can store the photos on that.

If you buy a Chromebook, hire someone to help you move the photos. Please know that prior to doing that, for any photos you edited in Picasa you must click "save" while viewing them in Picasa. If you did not give the save command, the edits will not show up anyplace except when viewing in Picasa.

It sounds like you might be in for a bit of learning curve, so you'll just have to decide if this is all worth it. Personally, if I wasn't so in love with the photo editors I currently use (Photoshop Elements and plug-ins like Nik Collection and Topaz), I would use only a Chromebook. I love mine!

Someone asked a similar question a few weeks ago. They were looking for photo processing programs that they could use on a Chromebook.

Google dumped Picasa because it didn't move people to the their Cloud like they wanted. So, it makes no sense at all for Google to support Picasa with the GoogleChrome operating system. Defeats their purpose to push people to their cloud service.

I think you are Out of Luck on that one.

If you use google photo you can upload your pictures and edit them online with your Chrome book. Its not photo shop but it is similar to what you find in Picasa.

Keep it as long as you can, these manipulating organisations make things difficult for us that we are forced into what they want us to do.
We are the customers, after all.
I swear by Picasa for the reasons you mentioned, but so many people are under the false belief that their pictures are stored in Picasa. They are not.
You must have a 'My Pictures' folder into which you move your pics from camera, chip, or from emails etc??
That's where they're stored.
If Picasa is your default picture viewing/editing programme, you open a pic from your pictures folder with Picasa.
That's where you do your editing. When you click save, it automatically saves the edited pic into where you opened it from, 'My Pictures'. If you want to keep the original image, you click Save As & you then have a copy of both orig & edited image.
If you have a different default viewing programme, you then fight click the pic & choose open with & choose Picasa.
Do your business in Picasa & either save or save as.
The thing I can't understand, & it's been discussed many times on this forum, is that you don't store your pics in Picasa.
It's an editing medium, pics are stored in a Pictures folder, like 'My Documents' or My Videos, or even Downloads, if you have your start menu set up that way.
Open with Picasa, edit, & save/save as.

As for Chrome book, I'm not familiar with it, but I've heard Chrome is a pain of a browser.
I've recently up dated to Win 10 & although I'd prefer Win 7, 10 is not so bad you can't get over it.
There were a few problems with drivers of addons which 10 didn't address automatically, but not insurmountable.
I have recently acquired my elderly mums computer which has Win 7 & Picasa. I'll keep it for these things.
I still use Picasa with Win 10, but like you, I find PSE9, poor man's Photoshop, too complicated.

He just asked a simple question about the chromebook. It works fine with Google photos. It's not about the system trying to f**k with people. Get over it!! Educate yourself about the chromebook then comment. Lighten up a little and enjoy life. It's too short to worry about it.
