Shooting the pier

Shooting the pier is a term used in surfing when a surfer catches a wave and goes from one side of the pier to the other through the support columns. As you can see in this photo, the barnacles on the pillars are something to avoid at all costs to both the surfer and also the board. It takes great skill to shoot the pier as well as guts. WOW, Brent. That looks like a really good way to have a really bad accident!

That is the truth AzPicLady. I have seen guys get their leashes wrapped around the columns and their boards get worked. There is a riptide usually by the pier too which makes paddling out kind of tricky. You have to have the knowledge prior to being out there.

Good shot Brent. Haven't seen that since I left the west coast. The piers in Florida are loaded with fishermen and surfers have to keep their distance not that we would have many waves which would allow them to shoot the pier!

Brian, there are lots of fishermen off the Huntington Beach pier too. Usually off the end where the surfers are not.
Thanks for the "good shot Brent" comment!

Nice shot Brent. Wow I would imagine you have to be a very well conditioned athlete to do this feat. Talent is a must.

You got that right Jules Karney.......Confidence plus years of surfing. You don't shoot the pier the first time out in the water!

Hi Brent, Oh yeah, I'd shoot it ok - with a camera. Not on a surf board like that bloke is. LoL He's got a death wish.

You and I are on the same page infocus. I'm an experienced surfer and would not do that. It's not worth the risk of my board or my body.
