Bird' 8,000-mile flight of fancy
For commitment to its breeding partners, the male pectoral sandpiper would appear unbeatable,
according to research which found that it flies up to 8,000 miles to find females.
The Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Stamberg, Germany, whose research is published in Nature,
found that the birds travelled on average of 1,860 miles in a single season, dropping in on up to 24 breeding sites.
