Like the title says I need insurance on my cameras, lenses, lighting etc.
Who what when where..... I shoot live music , events and action sports mostly. My equipment is in areas of use where there is a great chance of accidental damage or theft . Besides homeowners insurance can someone suggest other options. Would homeowners insurance come use in the field?

My gear is completely covered by my homeowner's policy. Every company has differing policies concerning this, check with yours. It is not too terribly expensive.

Just a suggestion but when I need insurance or have a query I ask an insurance man.

Had to put my equipment on a rider in order to have full coverage at home or away. It even covers me dropping my camera off a cliff. I have about 15K worth of equipment and the coverage costs me about $110 per year.

Same with my policy. AMICA Insurance. No deductible and a little less for $17K.

Again,non-commercial use.

If you are shooting commercially I would suggest getting equipment, liability, omission & ? Insurance through an organization like PPA or similar. When we had our studio the studio and all the equipment was under an umbrella business policy that was not very expensive. And it paid when a camera & lens crashed to a church floor when someone knocked over a tripod.

Now that I no longer have a studio and just shoot mainly personally my gear is covered under a separate policy with my home & auto insurance agent. It's very inexpensive and just required a list with S/N's and a note from my local dealer stating replacement cost.

Read your initial post again. Look into a policy that includes liability. If a lightstand with a head or moonlight hits a person or lands on a car, your liable. If someone trips over a power cord, same thing.

When we had our studio we needed proof of insurance before we could shoot in hotel reception halls.

NO, if you are shooting professionally you want HIGH RISK insurance, it covers you personally and also covers your equipment if it some how causes damage to some thing or some one plus of course theft. IT IS EXPENSIVE. My home owners policy covers me now.

Beware PPA insurance. They only pay depreciated value, not replacement cost!

I agree totally. I carry insurance for a couple of reasons.

1. It is the smart thing to do. I don't want to have to come up with the money to replace equipment that I've already paid once for.
2. I want to be protected from damage claims regardless of how true they may be. Remember, when you are out shooting, you are (mainly) concentrating on your subject and a lot of things may be going on around you that you aren't paying attention to. Especially kids playing in the area. Normally, when I do these shoots, I take my wife or an additional person to observe and keep people away from tools, props etc.
3. There are some people that will claim to be injured or have property damage caused by my equipment just to try to get a settlement. Often times, businesses or insurance companies will settle just to make a claim go away. I don't need the distractions so I carry insurance.
4. There are jobs or clients that require that you show proof of insurance either when you are bidding on a job or when you are making arrangements for the shoot. (Note: my insurance covers, not only the equipment and subjects, but also any incidental incidents, like a light falling on a car, etc. You wouldn't believe some of the weird claims that people make in hopes of getting a buck. I've even had a person in a nature park parking lot claim that the flash from my strobe caused them to drive over a curb. I was 100 yards away from the area and all of my strobes were faced the other way.. NOTE: once I have my equipment set, I take a couple of wide angle shots of the area including my equipment in order to show lawyers or the court how my shooting area was set. It only takes a couple of minutes and it is good protection. Make sure that you have identifiable landmarks in the photos so that you can determine the direction things were pointed. Also take a couple of shots showing orientation of equipment to any public parking or access to show that you've considered it. I have been known to hang blue tarps from tree branches or stretched between a couple of poles to protect areas from the effects of flash. If nothing else, it shows the court that you considered the issues and attempted to mitigate them. We do live in a litigious society and there are some people that will do anything for a free ride. Ask any grocery store, department store etc. about people dumping dish soap on aisles and then doing a slip trip and fall in order to sue the store.

My gear isn't insured, but many people here do have insurance. It's a mandatory annual expense that will increase over time, and will probably increase if you have a claim.
