The Vello shutter release that BH has on its Deal of Day, does any one know if will take a pic in front of the camera? I could not find info that said where you had to be.
I bought one and the remote part quit working after a short while, but it still works if you keep it corded to the camera
It's not infrared. It's radio, so yes.

I have this one and I can set it up outside my home and sit inside and shoot from anywhere in my yard...and I have just over an acre of property...
Vello FreeWave Wireless Remote Shutter Release for Nikon $35 dollars at B&H
Thanks every one. I was thinking the radio would go 360 degrees.

I have had 2 of them for 3 or 4 years. They are wireless remotes with the receiver attached to the camera by a short cable specific to that camera. (meaning that my D7100 takes one cable, my D70s a second and my D610 a third) The receiver can sit on the hot shoe if you want or I just made a Velcro spot on the tripod so that I could use the hot shoe for my strobe. You can stand in front of the camera, behind the camera or 10 yards away from it. I use it a lot for timed exposures so that I don't bump the camera on the tripod.
Be sure to tell them which model and brand of camera you are using as the cables are model and brand specific. The Vello release is standard so you can get multiple cables for one release and hand controller. Also, You can get multiple releases and on hand controller and control multiple cameras at the same time. I've been known to have all 3 of my cameras on tripods and use them to shoot an eclipse or something.
I have one and love the way it works. Be sure you take the battery out of the receiver when you put it in your bag. Mine kept burning through batteries and I think it may have been getting turned on by josteling around. Once I started removing the battery I am getting a lot more life out of them.
I had the exact same problem with batteries and my Vello Shutter Boss. Learned the hard way to always remove the battery and keep a spare on hand.

I use one of them and you can be anywhere you want to be, you can be in the house, while your camera sits on a tripod somewhere outside, or whatever you feel like doing and it does not matter if you're in front or behind the camera, as long as you're in the "about 300' " range! I use mine on a daily basis and I never had any battery issues so far, nor do I needed to replace any yet and I have used this one for a little over 3 years! Mine is actually a Flashpoint unit, but it is made by Vello (Wireless Intervalometer/Timer and Shutter Release). Needless to say, one of the best 20 bucks I've ever spent!

Old, rumor has it that the monkey(sometimes it's a nut) should be 10 inches behind the camera!!!
But I think it's only a rumor!
As has been said, if it's wireless, you can be anywhere.
Also keep in mind that with the remote, the camera Auto Focuses when the shot is taken but not so with the self timer(at least with most Canons)!

It will take the shot from anywhere within a hundred meters unless you are blanked by metal walls. Sheetrock walls are okay. I had one for a while. It had the bad habit of turning on from jiggling around in my pack. I dumped it for the Yongnuo RF 602 (Now 603) mostly because it didn't turn on by itself. They both work the same way. By changing the cable, I have now used the Yongnuo on two Nikons, a Canon and two different Sony alphas.
Such a deal.
I ordered one yesterday morning (B&H) and it came in today.
I've not tried all of the functions yet, but the primary one works great.
(Thanks for the battery warning with the ON button being pressed in the bag!)
