I've always used glass screen protectors (I don't use the plastic ones that come with the camera) on my D5000, D7000 and now D7200 and glad I did. I figure that the small price for a tempered glass protector is well worth it. My wife had a Nikon P&S and did not want one. Problem was she kept the camera in her pocketbook and you can fill in the blanks. Camera cost $200. The replacement screen from Nikon was nearly 1/2 that.

I don't use one, and don't feel I need one. I am very careful with my cameras - never drop them, never bang them. So far, I've never had a scratch. However, if you are accident-prone or are rough with your camera, a protective screen probably makes good sense.

Define the word....accident??

*(I have to laugh about this post. It seems that nearly everybody has and recommends some kind of screen protector even if the screen is made of mineral glass, very hard glass impervious to just about every normal thing. Even those who refuse to use things on their lens.) LoL

As for the OP question on screen protectors. I use one that originally came from my wife's cell phone, trimmed to size and stuck on. It works great even after removing it from her phone! I've got another from her on my 2nd camera. (She almost goes through cell phones like a fish goes through water!)

Note that I specifically wrote "accident-prone", which calls for a much different definition than "accident".

I got the Vello film type screen protectors for my D500.

What brand AND does the touch screen work as before?

Just because it hasn't happened doesn't mean it can't happen. Better to be safe than sorry and have screen protection.

Accidents happen. Prone or otherwise. That's why they are called accidents. To me buying a $15-20.00 Piece of plastic is a so what.

I have them on all my cameras, but I don't use the glass ones. They are made of very hard glass and if they do get broken on the camera, the sharp edges on the broken glass can damage the glass on the view screen.

I have a Nikon D5100 & the 5200 with movable screens. They swing out of the way during shooting. They fold back into the back of the camera when done. Not much chance for scratches. A big plus for me. I hate those expensive replaceable covers.
