Good afternoon all !!! I'm looking for some advice on purchasing a new photo printer. Most of what I print are photos even thought I also need a printer that copies, scans, etc. Any advice on what brand and model that will give me quality photo and copies that is not too expensive? Sure would love some advice. Thanks, sister3

If you mostly print photos, get a photo printer. If you need something to do all that other stuff, then get a multifunction printer. I am partial to Canon on both types, though I use a cheap Epson WF3640 that I got at BJ's for around $90 for the do-everything printer. I don't use it to print photos, though. For that I use fine art paper and an Epson 4880 (17" paper rolls) and an HP Z3200 (24" paper rolls). The Epson is 8 color and the HP is 11 color. Both make amazing prints.

Also, the scanner in the Epson WF is just ok. Good enough for document scanning and copying, but I have a separate Canon scanner, which does film and slides as well.

Epson WP-960. Makes "real photos" on their premium papers.

So - you are looking for a three-in-one printer. Likely to print to size A4? I have owned Epson and HP but the models change continually. HP always had print heads built into the ink cartridges - but I am not sure if this is still so, however - it is a question to ask your retailer. Epson have separate ink heads. Printers can be problematic - less so if used regularly. Most problems, what ever make, are paper feed or print heads clogging up. I now have a Canon (MG5650) and it has worked for me well for about a year. Go for highest dots per inch you can afford - again your retailer should advise - make sure he knows you wish to print quality photos. The costs of printers are low but the printer inks are expensive - what ever make you buy. For the best photo prints you need four or more colour cartridges. If you print a lot of photos go for six colour, which will be more economic and more efficient with better colours. Your retailer can also explain the advantage of using inks that are made with dyes - longer lasting and less likely to fade long term. This post is just to advise you what to ask your retailer about. Good luck.

You might want to ask this excellent question by posting it on the UHH "Printers and Color Printing Forum". There are members there with expert experience on the subject of printers. Subscribing to the section is free and you can cancel/return any time you wish.

I shoot Canon and also have a Canon Mx922 all-in-one printer. Not expensive and I am able to use non-OEM ink. The 8,5 X 11 pictures that I have printed have been outstanding. Good luck.

I currently have a Canon MX870 which has been going well for several years. It is an all-in-one, only 3 color cartridges and two black, so not as good as a dedicated photo printer, but I get very nice 8x10 prints from it. Looking to upgrade, but what I am looking at is expensive - either the Epson P800 or the Canon PRO-1000. Both are well-regarded, each has advantages as well as disadvantages over the other. Still deciding! A lot depends on what you can afford and what level of quality you demand. My suggestion would be to research choices on a website like B&H. You can filter for your price range and other characteristics, which helps to narrow it down. Get the best you can afford! And the newest version will be more up-to-date. In general, Epson and Canon seem to be the best with printers at all price points.

Over the years we have had HP, Canon and now Epson. The HP wore out and was replaced with a Canon All in One that died after two years and was replaced with a second upgraded model. It also died after two years. We now have an Epson XP-850. It is very compact and uses 6 ink cartridges. It has flown to England, as checked baggage (in its original shipping box), sat on the backseat of an SUV for a 30 day, 6,000 mile road trip, is now 5 years old and still works great. But the largest paper size is 8-1/2" x 14". I would strongly suggest that you look at the Epson XP line if you are looking for a good All-in-One printer.

I'm using an Epson 4550 with 4 bulk ink tanks. The quality for "photo printing" is marginally OK but is great for all other office functions AND a year's supply of ink is less than $50.00 if replacing all 4 colors. In summary, it's a great office printer but if photo printing is your goal then follow the advice offered above. Take care & ...

I have looked at and read reviews about several photo printers. The best for me was the Canon IP series. Lexmark, now only marketed commercially, is excellent as is many Epsons designed for photos. Keep away from ANY of the H-P's .... really crappy and no good for photos. Cheap price and cheap quality. You get what you pay for.
