I thought there was a way to turn the Live View on for Photos, in Manual Mode, to see the tone difference on screen, while changing the aperture or shutter speed dial. When I try this, the screen darkens or lightens momentarily, but then returns to what the correct exposure would be if adjusted properly. After tripping the shutter, the picture then shows how I adjusted it; that is, too dark or too light. I must be doing something wrong. Also, pushing the Preview button should allow me to see the DOF preview on the Live View screen, but nothing happens when I push it; although, through the Viewfinder I can see the DOF preview as I should.

I have the same issue on my D7000. On my older D3100, the lcd live view changes with manual settings. Whatever I see in live view is pretty much what I get in the image. On my D7000 it doesn't. It does flash the actual preview (eg. darkness if underexposed) for about an eigth of a second. I have no idea how to get an actual live view preview. I tried setting the preview and function buttons for that but that didn't change anything. If you or anyone comes up with the answer I'd love to know. As it is, I have to take test shots on the D7000 to get the correct manual exposure settings.

Oh boy, google is our friend. Just googled it and got the answer. Go to the menu, then to the shooting menu (the camera icon), then to Movie settings, then to Manual movie settings, and select ON. Whatever you see in the live view (for both video and still pics) is what you get. As you change settings the screen lightens and darkens, just like the image. While auto focusing you get the full bright view, but once focused it goes back to the actual live view preview. This worked on my D7000 and I'm guesing will also work on your D7200.

My menu is different. Camera and Movie are separate icons. There is no Manual Movie setting.
I hope someone else knows the secret.
Thanks anyway. Glad You got yours working.
BTW What was the phrase you used to Google?

Sorry it didn't work for you. I googled Live view on d7000. That led me to an article that said the d500 didn't have live view that changed with changes in aperture like the d7000 did, if you changed the d7000 live manual movie setting to on. I guess the google phrase to enter would be live view on the d7200. There was a previous thread on this at UHH. The conclusion on that thread was the exposure preview was not available on the d7200, and dof preview was only available through the viewfinder. I haven't seen any google articles that differ, although one article said the exposure preview was available in modes other than manual. So I guess if that is true you can only set iso and either aperture or shutter to get a real exposure live view on the d7200. Although you could see what the camera sets in either of those modes and underexpose or overexpose in manual.

Above is a link to a 30 second You Tube movie for making that setting on a Nikon D750. The button setup is similar on a D7200 as it is on a D750 so it may work for you. Basically, on my D750 I go into live view, press "I" button on the back of the camera, then scroll through the options to the last one and change it from "OFF" to "ON." Take care & ...

Just checked this out. The D7200 has a whole separate menu for movie settings, but unfortunately, it doesn't have a Manual Movie Settings feature. I also checked out the D750 suggestion, but the "i" menu settings display is different, it seems. Guess you just don't have the ability to "see" the changes to an image through the LV screen on the D7200. Looks like chimping and adjusting accordingly is the only way.

I checked it out too. To bad. Guess I'll have to get a D500.

Or go mirrorless.

I believe the D500 also lacks the ability to see exposure changes on the live view. It's odd. On the D3100 it's always there. On the D7000 and D750 and some others, you have to turn it on. On the D7200 and D500 it's not available in manual mode.

Seems it's not available in any mode on the D7200.

The D7200 is supposed to be very fast at auto focusing. Maybe Nikon thought it would compromise the speed of the auto focus system? Can't figure out why they would remove something that previous models had that worked well. A couple of years ago I loaded the Pilgrim hack into my d3100 firmware. It enabled changing the shutter speed in live view while shooting video to alter the exposure, and increased the video bit rate to 59,000. A free hack did what Nikon could have done but had no interest in doing.

One of the features that's appreciated with mirrorless cameras is the ability to see the changes to the image on the screen or in the EVF. That is one reason I'd be willing to give up the D7200 and gear and go back to mirrorless. Maybe Nikon will take note and issue a firmware update that will enable that in live view. Seems to me that if they did that on some previous models, they could do it on current ones, like the D7200 and D500.

Good suggestion!
