Hi I'm new to this forum so this is my first post,, I have a Nikon D90 and I just bought the Nikon 70-300mm vr lense, My problem is before I bought the Nikon lense I was using a Tamron 75-300 none vr, much cheaper lens than the Nikon, I recieved the Nikon yesterday and am not happy at all with the sharpness of the shots, At 70mm it is pin sharp, but anywhere from 200-300mm it is far too soft, infact the Tamron is better quality at the 300mm range, These lenses ar £450 and I expected much better quality than I am getting, I tried hand held with VR on and off, and compared both lenses on tripod with VR off on the Nikon all outside in good light,, Am I doing something wrong ? or is this the quality I should expect,, I went to my local lake and took many many shots of swans, ducks ect and more than half were blured and out of focus,,, I just hope and pray it's something I'm doiing wrong,,, Thanks for reading this post ,any help would be appreciated,,,,,,,
Jimmy

Nope, I have this lens and it's pretty sharp. Do you have a sample we can look at?

Jimmy, check the aperture. Different lenses have different sweet spots, usually 1-2 stops up from the bottom... i.e. for a f2.8 the sweet spot where the lens performs best is f4-5.6. Also, it is possible that you got a bad copy of the Nikon. Unless you bought gray market, check with Nikon, or your dealer, they may switch it out for you.

Thanks for the feedback lads. I have seen the post just posted and I now understand the lens is not good at the full 300mm, I took some shots of flowers in my next doors garden lastnite, Maybe 40ft away at full 300mm, widest fstop with VR on resting up against a shelf, The flower was totally blurd, I shot some birds maybe about 10ft away on 200mm f8, bit dark but clear,.If I photograh a bird 200meters away, should I expect it to be sharp at 300mm, or blurd ?? Someone mentiond a 'gray import' Well I bought the lens brand new from a dealer on Ebay, So how will i know if its a 'gray import' and how will I know if its a 'bad' copy of this lens.. All I have learnd by getting this lens is my expectations were much higher for this lens.....Thanks again lads,,much appreciated I did try to send pics ,but they didn't send.......

Hi Jimmy,
You won't get the bird at 200m. If I can just give you an idea, I use a 600 f4 and need to be within 20m of the subject.
You could set it up remotely? No fancy stuff needed here just a bit of food bit of camo and a release. Make sure you set the focus to manual and keep the aperture small, f11+. Increase to ISO and get the shot.
Have fun and don't be afraid to ask any questions.

I and my friend both have this lens and try as i may I cannot get what I consider a sharp image out of either lens .I used a very solid tripod, low iso, F8 or F11 ,remote control, even his lens my cam my cam his lens ,good light.I have since got a sigma 50-500 os and am very pleased with it.

Hi IamPJ..The link you posted here will not work. I found that it will work if you remove everything after the g at the end of it.
Good Info, thanks

Jimmy. Don't give up. I had the same problem posting photos and figured out it was my internet explorer. Download Google Chrome or Firefox and use this as the browser when you upload photos to this site.
Sounds crazy but it worked for me and several others I mentioned it to.
