New Pentax Camera Coming?

Pentax tends to be very secretive about their plans, but sometimes we can learn things from what they patent / register. I cannot read Japanese, but I'm told that the Japanese-language web-site Nokishita is reporting Pentax has registered a DSLR camera called "KP" with Indonesian authorities, presumably because of WiFi; the last time this happened, the K-70 was registered in Korea maybe a month before its formal announcement.

There are always new models coming, Pentax is not any different then any other companies in how they go about this.

Pentax users got very little at Photokina and nothing at CES. You don't have to join our parade, but please don't rain on it either.

They just recently released the awesome K1 (and they are busy making ff optics), but new models are not far behind, I'm sure.

I have a pile of Pentax lenses and cameras. I am shooting primarily Nikon now. ONLY because of very superior tracking focus. I shoot a lot of birds in flight. I want/need for Pentax to step up. I first started with Pentax in 1968.

alandg46: I started w/ Pentax about the same time. And I also have lots of camera's and lenses from the old days. Once you start, it's hard to stop. I lived through their dumb insistence on keeping the screwmount days until they finally converted to a bayonet mount. That was a long slog!!!

Pentax just announced the KP, an new 24mp crop sensor camera. It features an electronic shutter as well, so you can shoot wide open in bright environments, meaning, you can shoot at 1/24,000 of a second - awesome! It also is , as usually, moisture and dustproof/resistant and features an articulated screen!

But the same crummy tracking focus. Damn it.

That isn't clear yet. It has the processor from the K-1, but as far as I know, they haven't revealed anything about auxiliary hardware or software.

I suspect if the autofocus had been worked over, it would be the big headline. That's been the biggest complaint with Pentax for years. And the reason I have a Nikon D500. I had to work at birds in flight with my K-3 and still only about 60% keepers. With either the Nikon D800E or the D500 it's near 95%. Better with the D500 though.

The Pentax is good training.

All I can do is to refer you to the few previews thus far

Perhaps most significantly, Ricoh notes that it has improved its autofocus algorithms such that the Pentax KP should offer noticeably better AF performance and accuracy than past models using the same AF sensor.

added: but I honestly don't expect the $1100 Pentax KP to match performance of the $2000 Nikon D500 {B&H prices}

It can't stay with a Nikon D7200 or my brother's Nikon that he bought at Walmart. Pentax knows that it's behind here. We all need to quit making excuses for them and be vocal about fixing the focus.
