First post - been watching various posts for a while.
I have been using LR3 and thenLR4 and have become comfortable with them so far. What other programs should I look at that are not too difficult to learn and use, are not too expensive and are compatible with LR so that I can do some editing manipulations that LR does not do? Photoshop CS seems way too much and too expensive. Any comments or suggestions would be helpful

I would look seriously at PS Elements. It really is PS without some of the horns and whistles, and does an incredible job at a really affordable price.

GIMP is worth considering, it is comparable and as powerful as Photoshop but it is free of cost in open source. However it has a steep learning curve like PS. However there is online tutorials for free and inexpensive books from Amazon like GIMP 2.6 for Photographers. If you need more info PM me. BTW Maryland is my birth-state.

Don't mess around. They all have a learning curve; including the free programs. Elements 10 is a perfect marriage to lightroom. You can find half price sales all the time (around $50.00). It is about 95% of cs5 so it is not lacking at all. It will also update to camera RAW 7.

I have a brand new copy of Photoshop Elements 10 that came with my video software. Never been installed. It's yours for $50 and I'll ship it for free. Shoot me an IM.

You are 100 % correct tainkc. Elements 10 is an excellent choice for saving bucks. I also have PS CS5 and just upgraded to CS6.

I have tried Gimp and in compaison with Photoshop. find it sorely lacking.

Thank you all for the suggesstions. I may have and old version of PSE that perhaps I can upgrade on my MAC. Will just have to go through some learning curve to get familiar with it again. Never could get the hang of layers.

If you need help with layers...PM me.

It helps if you think of layers like those old transparencies from an over head projector. They are all laying on top of each other and you are looking straight down on them.
Where they are clear....the one underneath shows through.

Where you erase, the lower one shows through there also.

Rather than sorely lacking, it is different. Open source apps are very flexible and customizable. Those features that it lacks are available as plug-ins.

What are you wanting to do you're unable to in LR4?

OnOne has a layers plug in, which I believ is free. Their Portraits may be FREE too.

If there is a cost, price was $19.95 ea.
